The next step up from an ATA100 7200rpm drive is a 10,000rpm Ultra160 SCSI drive.
Some of the new DDR boards come with onboard SCSI controllers, or you can add an extra controller card.

15k RPM!!! I hope they come with a fan!
I use a Cheetah Ultra 160 10,000rpm hard disk and to be honest with you, it doesn't get much hotter than my EIDE Western Digital drives that run at 7,200rpm. I've been using this hard disk on my system for over a year now with no special cooling for the drive. I use applications that utilize this hard disk quite severly and haven't had a single problem related to heat or any other...
I don't think we'll be seeing any faster than 7,200rpm for some time for IDE interface hard disk drives... Perhaps this limit is due to IDE controllers???
