With that kind of range you can prolly get 3.1 megapixel or better,
check out some of these links. http://www.dpreview.com/ http://showcase.netins.net/web/wolf359/digresor.htm
I myself have an HP 315 2.1 Megapixel, retail 300 bucks, tha image quality is not that good.
If you are familiar with photography you will see that some offer a myriad of features versus image quality, but I would go for image quality. Of course it goes hand in hand with how much you are willing to spend.
I hear Fuji among others are known for good image quality for the range you seek.

I've bought a LOT of digital cameras.

From $40-900 cameras

What SIZE do you want, this is a biggie.

The larger the megapixel, the larger the final print size. All other things being equal.

A GOOD 1.3 should print photo quality up to 5 x 7"
2.2 = 8 x 10 "
3.3 = 11 x 17" MAYBE !

The LENS is one of the most important parts.

The Olympus Brio D-100 is a super small ultra quality 1.3, get one from staples.com for about $208.00 using the $40 www.techbargains.com (http://www.techbargains.com) coupon
The BEST DEAL I know of for the casueal shooter.

The Kodak DC-3400 2.2mp, is another great camera whick will set ya back somewhere around $335.00 -> http://www.us.buy.com/retail/computers/product.asp?sku=10223499&loc=2099

Hewlett Packard's 618xi is rated as the BEST BUY of all 2.2mp's under $500.00, get it here for $366.00 http://www.us.buy.com/retail/computers/product.asp?sku=10260176&loc=2099

I've omitted all the cameras that do NOT have SUPERIOR image quality, such as the Kodak DC215, the Canon S100, the HP 315 etc
as well as the ones rated too cumbersome to use or have other death inducing qualties.

I highly reccmend the little Olympus Brio D-100, the LCD sreen is superfast, size is small but not TOO small to hold. You CAN use standard AA batteries. It has a USB port.

I took a close up pic of my speedometer reading on my p/u with the Brio, you could see lint on the bezel that I didn't notice before..

If you are More than a casual photo-bug, then my next choice would be the HP 618xi, the specs suggest a very very capable machine. The reviews do also.

I'll try to find some links that I've read about them when you decide which way you need to go,
Consumer
ProSumer
or what.
