well, i want to network two computers but i dont want to go out and buy a crossover cable...

well, i found some cables in the garage and i have no clue if they need a hub or are crossever...

the text on the cable says:
BERT-TEK 24 AWG CMR 75C (UL) CSA CMG 60C HYPER-GRADE ETL VERIFIED TIA/EIA 568-A S ISO/IEC 11801 CAT V O598 296448 FT

any help is greatly appreciated

Look at the ends of the cables - put them side by side, facing out, with the hook toward the ground. See the colours of the wires from left to right? If they're the same in both ends, it's a patch cable. If they're different, it's a crossover.

chances are that it's a patch cable.

A typical patch would look like this on both ends.
wht/orange
orange
green/wht
blue
wht/blue
green
wht/brown
brown

if it was a crossover, the green and orange pairs would be switched on one end.

thanks guys

i ended up going to best buy and purchasing a D-Link 5 port switch...

with this switch, can i connect it to a router, which will be connected to a DSL Modem so it can share a connection?

do you already have a router? if not, just get a router with a built-in switch like the linksys BEFSR41. I prefer Linksys over Dlink, but buy whatever you like. :)
