He could also do it the easy way we do it at school whenever we get a new system in. We have a 540mb drive with dos and all the win98 setup files on it. We just plug it into the new system and boot to the 540. I made a batch file to fdisk and format the new drive and run install.5 minutes later setup is from the 540, installing onto the new drive. You can also put the new drive in a system with an os and copy dos and the setup file to the new drive. Either way eliminates playing around with dos cdrom drivers and is usually much faster.

Was that your friends question or yours? I would not recommend letting anyone who has such a simple question build a box for you.
Anyhow the link nunyadam posted will tell him how to do it.

while on the topic of installing os-es could someone tell me what i did?
ok my system files are gone. i dont have backup copies. i have a startup disk and my master recovery disk that came with my computer.
the recovery disk does not work. it never gets past the please wait stage.
i manage to get my cdrom working with the startup disk. i go to edit, to look for files on the cd that could help me
i open one at the prompt thing that is something like d:\dosmenu\backup
and i choose to back up fully from the cd
it reinstalls windows 98.. what happened? would that work if i had a totally unformatted hard drive? or was i just lucky
