Boy, am I embarrassed to have to ask this question. Suddenly, I can not view any of my jpg files. I have gone to file types, but do not know which program to associate the jpg files with in order to view them. None was associated (why, I don't know, because it was working OK). I tried Paint, but it only works with bmp files.
I am working with Windows 98.
Can anyone enlighten my ignorance. Thanks.
Mike

Your browser will do it http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

There's also a little program that comes on the Win98 CD.
Install it with the Add/Remove Programs utility. Select Windows Setup. It'll be listed under the Accessories selection as 'Imaging'.

Thanks, guys and gals, but . .
Actually, when I try to open a jpeg with my browser, it used Adobe Photoshop - very slow!
The imaging program will work, but . .
I can't figure out what USED to work ! Before, I could simply double click on a jpg from Explorer and it would load in a small program automatically. Any idea what it could have been?? Any suggestion, Susan, how to assign IExplore to jpg's so they load automatically without first starting IE5 and then loading the file?
Thanks again for your help, everyone.

MikeG, Susan tried steering you in the right direction, but I do not think you understood her advice. The simplest program to view your jpegs quickly is your browser. You can make the adjustment quickly by the following method....start/run/winfile...then find a jpeg from a file you wish to associate, then go to the file pulldown in the upper left, then choose associate. Looking through the executables that are there, you will find one called......"folder (c:\windows\explorer.exe)" Click it and say "OK" and you will see that your jpeg's are then opened quickly with explorer. Sometimes the file associations under the regular windows explorer are now actually what windows is using. Winfile gives you the ability to actually see what your file associations are. If you don't see the executable there in the list that you want, you can also browse for the file with the correct executable.
There is a windows short-cut to do the same thing but it does not always work. Go to windows explorer and left click and make your jpeg file "hot"..then hold down the shift key and right click and use "open with" when your options come on the screen, you can choose explorer to open those jpeg's, then check the "always open with" on the bottom to make sure that it always opens those files. Like I said sometimes this does not work, but it usually does.

Try prog called ACDSee 32 and Image Fox from www.acdsys.com. Free trials and with a little looking on internet you might find name and sn to register. I use them and like them as I can right click on pic file and can see thumbnail pic without opening photo prog.

Great suggestions!
Bob-NB, I went straight to your "explorer-method" and it worked. However, when I make the jpg "hot", Windows does not display a thumbnail image, as it did before.
Sounds like LeComaSemajessej's program works exactly like what I had originally. It had to be a Windows 98 program, because, as far as I know, I had never loaded anything else as an image display program.
This is unbelievable. I like what I had, but don't know what it was, and can't find it! It quit working all by itself! No one else uses this computer. No new programs were installed. Is that stupid, or what?
Every time I start thinking I'm pretty smart with computers, something very humbling like this happens!
Thank you all for your help. At least they will now display!

MikeG...you are now halfway there. Go back into your windows explorer and find the file where your jpg's are. Now open up the file....now go up to view in the pull down menu's....now set the view to .."view as a web page". This should show a preview of all of your files. Just click through them on the right and see if this hasn't fixed things.

Permanent fix for Viewing any files in Thumbnail view are these two methods..
method 1. start|run
regsvr32.exe /i shdocvw.dll
Method 2. Start|run
rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE5Maintenance "C:\Program Files \Internet Explorer\Setup\SETUP.EXE" /g "C:\WINDOWS\IE Uninstall Log.Txt"

Bob-NB, I already had it set to "view as a web page". Doesn't work. I turned it off, then back on - still no-go!
Jin Vitas, I tried method #1. It said "successfully installed", but it doesn't work. Should I try your method #2, or will they conflict?
Thanks, everyone.
Mike
In the Files list, (Open Explorer, View, Options, File Types) select the default viewer that is currently opening the .jpg files. Or, if it's there, select the .jpg file. Hit Edit, highlight Open, hit edit again, and in the Aplication to open file with line, there should be a "%1" after the program location line.
