Seems I found my answer about 'where the clawhammer went'. AMD has announced that the Clawhammer (Athlon64) is on hold until its release in September, quote:

AMD, officially, will say that the Athlon 64 is not out until September because it is waiting for the introduction of a suitable 64-bit operating system. This, The INQUIRER believes, is the Windows 64 bit version specifically for the Athlon64.

This move seems to echo AMD's original 're-arranged' launch schedules for the Athlon MP and Athlon XP processors, where the launch of the new Multiprocessor chip took precidence over the launch of their single processor counterpart.

This is old news, but it seems AMD is sticking to the original September release. That said, its too bad that AMD is moving away from the original Athlons now. Back in the day (geez, this wasn't too long ago) overclockers boasted that their overclocked Athlon XP's were OC'd to the equivelant of an Athlon XP 3400+ (which will sadly, never exist), and I had hoped we might see those ratings under un-overclocked environments, or at least a more robust range of 400mhz FSB bartons in the 2600/2800/3000 flavors. Ohwell!

I have to wonder though if (for the Athlon64 specifically) if AMD will stick to the PR rating system (E.G.: 3400+/3600+/3800+?)

The move to the 240/242/244 numbering system seems rather confusing on the part of the Opteron Processors, I have to wonder what the impact would be by moving to this new numbering system on the Athlon64 platform.

Comments? :t

I'd rather have it sooner, but then again why not just go for Sledgehammer (Opteron) if you're eager to get into AMD's 64bit CPUs? I might do that -- IF there were any motherboards to be had, and especially motherboards suitable for desktop and not just servers. I'm afraid that may have to wait until the ASUS nForce3 is released.
