Alright I bought a quantex computer approximately 2 years ago. The system was a pentium III 500mhz, 128mb ram (not sure what kind and i dunno how to find out), voodoo 3 2000 agp, 5.6gig hard drive....

recently I've felt it was time for an upgrade and I called comp USA. They stated that they do not do upgrades on the quantex brand computers and insisted i talk to quantex. Well unfortunately quantex is out of business and you can see my dilemma now..

Also, Im not a computer wiz so i do not know how to upgrade and would much rather not have to look inside my computer. Since CompUSA wont upgrade my computer, does that mean most of other places wont upgrdae it as well??

If it has to come down to me upgrading by myself im willing to try i guess but could someone suggest how i would go about it??

Im currently interested in upgrading to these parts : Athlon T-Bird 1.2ghz, 384 ram (not sure which kind, but would appreciately if someone could tell me), install an ethernet card (im getting dsl soon), get a LARGER hard drive, and maybe upgrade my video card to a geforce 2 gts.

Basically if i wanted to upgrade to these parts, would i have to take apart my WHOLE computer or will i just have to simply buy those parts and put them in? Also, would i have to buy a new motherboard and will any motherboard be compatible with the Quantex PCs??

thx for all your help - i know this post is long but im clueless and desperate

To upgrade to a 1.2GHz Athlon, you would of course have to buy a new motherboard (an intel processor will have a motherboard that may support a higher PIII but never an AMD cpu). Then you would probably need to buy a new power supply since that one is probably only a 250W PS. That leaves the RAM, hard drive, cd drives, floppy and whatever cards you have installed (modem, video, sound).

You would also need to backup your data and do a reformat of the hard drive (wipe it clean and start over) since you will be changing the motherboard.

I will type more later if the topic does not develop...as for now, I need to go home.

Good luck
Dave

To find out what kind of RAM you have: Go to
http://www.memman.com/

and answer the questions in the forms.

It may not be ideal for your new MB, and you would want it to be identical with the new 256 Megs, for reliability.

Hey Bro,

You might as well just build a new puter. It seems like you are going to upgrade everything. Build your own puter, or buy a new one. I have done both. If you are going to buy a T-Bird (my favorite because iI built a 1 Ghz monster wooohoo) you should look at a company called ABS. www.buyabs.com (http://www.buyabs.com)
I have bought from them in the past an they use all quality, no proprietary stuff (this is important if you are goiung to upgrade later.)

Or you can upgrade your current P3 with a n upgrade chip from powerleap to 850 mhz, and some more RAM, and get a bad *** Vid card and huge hard drive 7200 RPM. This would be cheaper than upgrading everything. Good Luck
