I thought I had done enough research but I think I may have stepped in it again;)
I put a AMD Athlon 2600+ 333 FSB on my KG7 mobo.I had read a FAQ on the ABIT site that stated that the KG7 supported all XP processers. Well..........I'm not so sure now. I did the bios flash, but It shows up as a 2000+ 133 FSB chip. I was told by McGlen techs that the reason the chip won't show correctly is that the board wont support a 333 FSB. I had thought originally that McGlen had sent the wrong chip. I have a e mail in to ABIT, and have posted on their forum as well.
Anybody here got any suggestions, or ideas as to what I'm up against?
It seems to me I might have to get a new board to be able to use this chip:( and I really don't wan't to go through setting up a new board.
Any help will be greatly appriciated.

IS thre an option in the BIOS to run the FSB at 166Mhz, if so set it as such and your running at the rated speed. If not then your gonna have to run it underclocked on the 133Mhz FSB or as high as you can get it

Thanx for the reply!
I haven't seen anything about setting the FSB to anything more than 133. Could I change it using a utility like CPU Cool, or something along that line?

According to the manual I looked at from the Abit website, you can use Soft Menu III to select a fsb frequency anywhere from 100 - 200 mHz. It looks like it has enough range of multipliers and you can also vary the ratio of fsb to pci to memory timing. Give it a try and see what she'll do.

I had a similar thing with an XP2700+ on a Microstar KT4-Ultra board where it didn't recognise the processor properly. It only treated it as a 1500 proc. The AMD web site pointed me to a FAQ re XP2800+ that said to set the FSB to 166 in the BIOS. I tried it and it worked a treat - now registers 2.175 GHz and the RAM is runinng OK at 333MHz.

Thanx guys:t
I reset the DC to 166 with a multiplier of 13 and it wont boot???
So I had to reset tha CMOS, and I set the multiplier to 10....still no boot???? What's the poissibility that the chip really is a 2000+?
What can I try next??

I guess we need to know more about what the computer does (or doesn't do) when you try to start up. Does it beep? My hunch now is that you don't have memory fast enough to keep up with the processor.

No post beep. BSD. I have PC 2100 DDR registered memory (765 meg)

After much trial and error on my part, I must admit to my lack of knowledge where it comes to OCing. In previous threads I have been advised( thank you all ) about what to do, but I am still failing.
I need to change the FSB to 166 (333 DDR) on my KG7 board, so I can realize the full potential of, or at least know that it is, a AMD Athlon XP 2600+.
In Soft Menu I have changed the multiplier, in increments, from 9.0 to 13+. I have changed the FSB speed, in increments, from 100 to 166. All I get is a no post after approving the CMOS change, and a BSD.
According to the user's manual this can be done. I must be missing something.
Any help would be greatly appriciated.

P.S. At this point in time the chip shows up in Soft Menu as a 2200+ (133)
But at the initial post (before entering the Bios) it shows as 2000+?

Your memory will limit you to 133 with maybe some additional headroom. But I doubt you'd get all the way to 166 or DDR 333. I would try to find some multiplier at 133 that may let you boot. You might have to look at memory timings in conjunction with the fsb. Or see if you have a boot option for fail safe and start there.
There's a compatability issue w/ that mobo and tbreds:

I fooled around in the bios and the best I could get was 1900MHz
(12.5*152). At default it runs at 1666MHz (13+*133)
I wish ABIT would come clean about the performance issues with this board (of course it has been discontinued )
I guess the search is on for a replacement mobo. Any suggestions? I need one that supports 333MHz FSB, and that I can use my Crucial PC2100 DDR on.

Yea, get a nforce2! Any brand-epox, asus, msi amoung the top choices. 400fsb support too if you get new revisions of them. Or asus 1.04 with bios 1004 and higher in asus's case. Also locked pci/agp multi's so your only oclocking the cpu and not the rest of system. Asynhc mode available if you want to run a 333fsb cpu on 133mhz mem.:( Your mem bandwidth will stink though. Running in duel mode will help alot. Most benefit from duel in benches shows when the mem is slower than cpu fsb. Helps reduce the latency from the bottleneck.:t

Been rainin here so I spent the afternoon looking into boards (on the boss's dime, he, he) The Asus A7N8X looks like a winner. One problem is that I just installed a Sound Blaster Audigy and I really like it. I can't find any new boards that will run the XP2600+ that don't have onboard sound. And I've read some posts that say disableing sound can be a pain in the tukas.
I'm also not looking forward to setting up a new board. I always seem to wind up doing the Format thingy:mad:
But with ya'lls help, and the things I've allready learned here, It should go fine;)
I still wish there was an easier way than butchering the cpu to get it to work on the board I have now:rolleyes:
Let cha know when I get started!

Just checked out Abits online manual, the KG7 only supports processors with an fsb of 100/133 x 2. This is without overclocking of course.
So unless your XP 2600+ has an fsb of 266, it won't work at its correct speed.

From what I've read on several forums, it could be fixed with a bios upgrade. Unfortunatly for KG7 users ABIT has quit supporting that board in favor of the KD7 series which from what I've been reading is having alot of problems.
I,m going to set up an old computer to use to "burn in" my new Epox 8RDA+, I got it instead of the ASUS A7N8X because B-Bill seems so enamoured with Epox. I'll use my old 1400T-bird and some other old parts to get the board up and runnig before putting it in my new case.
I'm kinda upset with ABIT but I guess buisness is buisness;)
Thanks again to all for all the help. I'll let ya'll know how it turns out.
Feel free to comment here on this thread any thoughts or suggestions...I'll be checking it often.
