There are other considerations involved also, price, system speed, burner software. I use a 10x-4x-32x HP w/ adaptec cd software and at $189.00 can't beat it for ease and price....most media is 10x-12x anyway, 12x + media is more expensive...PW

i got a yamaha 16x ide burner retail for $400 bux canadian i would recommend it highly its blazing fast and very kewl love the 8 meg buffer it sealed the deal for me over the 12x plextor

I'd still go for the Plextor for many reasons one of which is the BURN PROOF that the Yamaha don't have.

Also, @ 16x burning you need a CDROM capable to DAE at least at 16x to match, for CD-CD recording. so this may add more cost to the finaly purchase or you'll just copy cd's slower (say 12x instead of 16x) but for how long before you "feel the need for upgrading to rid the bottleneck".

Cd-Cd burning sucks. Plain and simple. It is better to rip it to a wav file and burn from that. So you could burn at 16x. Also Yamaha has waste-not technology which is basicaly the same thing as burnproof. I am having a hard time figuring out between teh plextor 12x and the yamaha 16x myself

What's the rush? It's a ready world. The saved time... ~10mins is quite irrelevant. I have 4x burner (~20min/650mb). If the time is so relevant I would like to think you've enough ram, like GB, to do other stuff while burning (if it has to be done with computer, there are other things to attend to too =) anyways.

FYI, look at the date of this thread...

Yamaha and Plextor easily make the best drives....some no name company cannot have a higher sustained rate than them.

Personally, I am happy with my 8x. I would be really happy with a 16x. Those who want the fastest each time are crazy. There is a happy medium, IMO.

yamaha and ricoh both have 20x's and there nicely prices too not like how the 16x was when it came out or maybe its just because i looked at pricewatch.

the numbers arn't meaning as much as they use too though the jump from 16x to 20x is only a minute faster.
