I'm currently using MS Office Shortcut Bar to launch my most commonly used applications.

Is this the best one out there?

Suggestions please...

I always hated the shortcut bar. Takes up some resources. I just make shortcuts in the Winows quick launch bar.

You can do what Steve said and just drag your Office shortcuts into the "Quick Launch" toolbar, or you can create other custom toolbars that you can place anywhere on your desktop. You can place it on any edge you want then set it to "autohide", it will behave just like the Windows Taskbar.
To reduce the size of the toolbar, remember to turn of the "Show Title" and "Show Text" options by right clicking on an unused portion of the toolbar.
