Just reinstall the chipset drivers (Intel, VIA). You can also stop letting Windows search for the drivers and force the driver update. Try using "Don't search..." and "Select from a list...".

That happens when you switch from legacy to ACPI PnP model in BIOS without reinstalling the operating system afterwards.
Either switch back to ACPI-off, or reinstall the operating system.

Peter means that you should enter BIOS setup and disable ACPI. Do I have to tell you how to do that?

No I said you have that PnP entry because you HAD ACPI disabled once.

If the PC is working, just let it be. I have disabled devices in my Device Manager too. You'll get used to it.

My last and newest one both wont boot with it disabled. Not sure why either. But wont even boot from bootable cdrom this way! No OS loaded-useing boot floppy too. Never finds my cdrom drives and hangs when looking for msdos mode drivers. LOL so I left it on. Though it causes Win ME to hang on restart functions. 98/XP are fine with it. Oh well. hehe;)
