In Microsofts happy world where Microsoft is the only OS designer and 98 ME 2K XP WinServer2003 are all compatible, you could link an old problematic 98SE and a new XP without a bother. But in the real world it is a different story.
Bought a 5m Cat5 crossover cable for £12. When i plugged the 2 PCs into each other - XP said "hey im networked! lets send a packet!" so the packet trotted of to 98 where it found a network adapter happy to welcome it! After a mug of hot choclate that packet walked back home to XP.
:x :x
This happened a few times but when i double clicked "My Network Places" on XP, it showed my 98s workgroup "oemcomputer." I clicked it and the happy mouse timer came up. Network properties told me that packets were being sent and recieved, yet nothing!
XP gave me an error "This network cant be accessed, make sure you spelt it right" Same happend on 98.
In frustration, i did the worst thing possible - Used the WinXP Home Networking wizard! Installed it on XP, and 98 by using my XP disc. 98 had to restart. When it finally did, it came up with a "Network adapter not found, please install al hardware before running the home network wizard"
After closing that box Explorer loaded, i saw a new icon in the taskbar. Moved my mouse over it to reveal - Internet Connection Sharing. Only at this time did I realise that XP was trying to share internet! Still nothing worked and 98 couldn't access the net through XP. So, considering this to be a lost cause, gave up!
That night i opend my download manager to continue a download i started earlier...
Sun May 25 10:10:59 2003 Connecting ftp.ftpplanet.com:21
Sun May 25 10:11:00 2003 Connecting ftp.ftpplanet.com [IP=xxx.xxx.xxx.xx:??]
Sun May 25 10:11:00 2003 Socket connected, Waiting for welcome message.
And so it stopped - tried again, same problem. Tried a HTTP download. Ran fine. Tried a different FTP download. Stopped at same place again!
I realised this was because of Inet sharing. To disable it, i went into connection properties but there was no option on any tab to disable it, even thought there was just before. I had to recreate my connection and it ran fine after that.
Why???? Why wont they network!? Why wont they work?? :D
