Need help with setting up my own broadband home network. I want to connect 3 computers to my broadband connection simultaneously. What would i need? i want to run the modem independant of any pc input so that the separate computers can connect to the internet through the modem over LAN whenever they want..

You'll need a Cable/DSL router, but it requires an Ethernet modem. You can't do this with a USB modem unless you're willing to build a 4th PC (basic unit - nothing fancy) to host the modem.

Well the dedicated computer could pose a bit of a problem but thats cool. The other query i have is that as u can see i'm from england, now our broadband internet is ADSL, but alot of routers and modems are DSL, is there a difference, will it effect how it works? cheers..

In the US the term DSL is used as a generic term to describe broadband Internet coming through the Tel.
Actually the prevalent service is ADSL.
ADSL Routers are as cheap as $19.
Example: Barricade 7004 4 Port 10/100 Router $19 after rebate. (http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0131236)

Bear in mind though over here in the Great Kingdom of United Britain we dont get rebates on our equipment

yeah i hate rebates, they are such a rip off, whenever i find low prices i look for the ones that do not need rebates
rebates = fake (about 50%/50% of the times)

So if rebates are fake 50% of the times
Do few rebates and extrapolate it to the price of the mentioned Router ($19) it will turn it to a $30 value.
That is about six No.1 Combo at your local Fat and Cholesterol Chain.
With a Router you get nice smooth Internet, and you are even protected with the NAT Firewall. Much safer than Fat & Cholesterol.
Life is good!!!

If u r running Windows 98 SE or 2000 or XP, u can make use of Internet connection Sharing, its a kind of free proxy server software thats built into the OS !
All u have to do is...(steps)
1. Right click on the DSL connection (one thats used for connecting to the ISP)...Click Advanced...
2. Check the Box thats displaying "Enable Internet connection"...
MAKE SURE U DONT TO ANYTHING ELSE...
3. Other systems, just make the TCPIP properties automatic...i.e...obtain IP address automatically....DNS automatically...etc
there u go...Hit n connect...u should be able to browse from other machines too... :t

I use a router to share the DSL connection among 5 computers.
my dsl 768 has over 40 on it.. its adsl so its 768/384 down/up.
routing has nothing to do with dsl type for sharing it. Its all in the tcp/ip addressing you use.

Try this link: www.netgear.com/education/broadband.html
The netgear "how to" pages have some useful gen. If you buy a router consider one with a wireless option. We have one and now use laptop with broadband in the garden!:-@
