Judging by the specs alone and from reviews id say the hercules game theater is more for profesional use. The platinum is also more expensive. The platinum has ALOT of software and 4 games (dues ex, thief2, mdk2, and unreal tournement) the platinum also has pretty good support. I suggest if you dont do lots of professional quality auidio editing go with the platinum.

PS gorgot to mention the platinum has a headset, remote and live drive, the game theater also has something similar to the live drive, which puts all sorts of inputs at the front of your comp it use a 5.25 bay.

The Game Theater breakout box doesn't mount in a drive bay it's a stand alone box.You can see good pictures of it here (http://www.gamersdepot.com/hardware/sound_cards/hercules/game_theater_xp/001.htm)

I really like the break out box of the hercules. I never liked the idea of the break out box taking up a drive bay.You get every audio port and 4 usb ports. The optical port would be great for recording to mini disk players and a number of other applications. Dolby 5.1 is sweetness.
I havent checked lately, but i think the SB Platnum is still $50 more. Max PC did benchmark the SB at 5 frames/per sec faster. All in all I'll trade 5 frames and some games for the better break out box and $50.

The Game Theater XP is the best of the best. The platinum's old news and it has some compitition now.
This is one well put together piece of hardware. I think its stil a bit pricy, but the platinums even more than it, so seems like a no brainer to me. The breakout box is just a box spotted full of connectors, which I think is really cool. Call me wierd, but I'd prefer the breakout in the drivebay, for portability. However, when you got as many connectors as the XP, you dont have much of a choice.

I thought I read somewhere that the SB uses more of the systems resources than the Game Theatre. Would this make a difference depending on the system you put it in? I have been looking into the Game Theatre though, to replace my SB Live. There's no problem with it, but it is the oldest piece in my PC...

I know how you feel
Its the only part of my comp that still exists from the first comp I built:
P2 350 @ 497
Abit BH6
128MB PC100 CAS2
Nvidia Riva TNT
SBLive! Value
Diamond 56k Modem
24x CD Rom

Today:
Duron 750 @ 1000
Abit KT7A-RAID
256MB PC133 CAS2
Nvidia Geforce2 GTS
SBLive! Value
10x/40x DVD-ROM

Thats been in there for a longggg time (What happened to Moore's law in Soundcards?). it is old technology, but no ones one-up'ed the live until recent times with the XP and Philips Acoustic Edge (and even thats debatable), You'll be happy with either card, regardless, but I think you'd be more statisfied to spend your hard-earned cash on an XP.

I also thought the SBLive had the highest CPU utilization of any card out there. I'm not to keen on this fact, so I didnt mention anything about Yar1182's citing from Max PC.
