I saw these at HardOCP and I thought HEY that would look REAL cool.
Anyone with some CG experience want to conjure up some picture? (1 Inch square). Then if it looks good, and enough people want them, we can get them made (think they make em in lots of 100) and sell em to our fellow members...and whoever makes it can make a tiny profit out of the selling em.
Anyone wanna bite?

I'm actually pretty handy with Photoshop5 and Illustrator 8. I work in a print shop and am going to school this fall for graphic design. I've done quite a bit of designing, and am becoming pretty popular in my area.
I'd be happy to do it, or at least take a shot at it. If you'd like to see anything on it, let me know. I'll post what I've come up with this week.
If everyone likes it (including SysOpt) I'll give SysOpt full rights to the image to use as they see fit. They don't have to pay me anything, yadda yadda yadda. I'd just love to get to work on designing this. I'm just trying to give back someone to the board that's given my so much (why do I sound like a Hallmark card?)

ok, i was doing some brainstorming and was wondering what single word could describe sysopt and the message board. 'overclocked'
Then I got to thinking. What images come to mind when you think of overclocking.. hmm, CPUs, video cards, etc. These are all obvious and overdone, and I want something original. Then it hit me... hampsters!
It's the best combination of what sysopt stands for with a little side joke for all those participants in the overclocking the hampster thread a while back.
I've done some parliminary sketches to get a feel for the look. I'll scan and post those soon. It basically has a little hampster running his heart out of a hampster wheel. There are all kinds of wires and gizmos hooked up to the wheel running to a computer. A digital counter sits besides the wheel reading 999.5Mhz. The top of the image reads something like "Come on, just a little more..." The phrase kinda carries a double meaning for the hampster and for sysopt in general. I know we are all trying to get "just a little more" out of our system. Plus, I know us computer geeks would love to get to the big 1Ghz. The computer screen reads "overclocked @ sysopt.com"
all these elements can be changed of course, but this is why it's called brainstorming.
I'll try and have the sketches done tonight.

Cool idea Ox, and a nice graphic too the way it is!
You might want to consider leaving the needle out though.....that way, when people get them, they can draw in the line corresponding to the speed they reached with the particular CPU/box they stick it on (just a thought).
Maybe you could add a red-line type of deal too similar to those found on tachometers for speeds 800Mhz and above <lol>.

Just so you all know, I did email Scott and he sent the email regarding the goods to the proper people at earthweb. Don't know if I was supposed to mention this part or not, but earthweb will be emphasizing more of "earthweb" than "sysopt" due to a redesign of the Sysopt.com site. Guess I or we will have to wait to hear what the guru's @ earthweb have to say.

SoopaStar
05-19-2000, 12:35 AM
See my post from the top of page two. Scott (sysopt) has no say in when and of the badges can be made. Earthweb owns the rights, slogans, etc of sysopt.com. It is up to them. If people awnt to produce them (which I personally do...) we could be liable for copyright infringement. Scott is talking to the 'right people' about it.
I personally feel that if they don't want us to make them, then its wrong on their part. This is a communitty of computer people, and saying, "No, you can't make it w/o us getting a profit from it" would spoil the outlook on this site (for me anyways). Websites are a dime-a-dozen now-a-days. too choose one that you like to participate in/with and feel an attachment to is to the advantage of the site. Wanting to offer 'free' advertising to that site is also a bonus to them. Making money off a good feeling from the users is a bad thing http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif . Just my two cents.

I just visited earthweb.com and found this link from their privacy page:
[url\http://www.earthweb.com/about_us/permissions_request.html[/url]
I filled it out and will keep you all posted regarding any information I recieve from them. If anyone knows of a page that will do a Poll or Survey type thing that we can get an esitmated number of orders or peole interested, that woudl probably help this along. Also, I would like to take charge of part of it, if no one else wants to. I think a good judgement of prices would be something like:
computer badges: $1-2 depending on qty initially ordered
T-Shirts: mostplaces will do them for $11-15 depending on no. of colors adn tshirt quality (I like good quality to high quality cotton shirts..no cheap "Hanes" undershirts.
Mugs: I would assume $8-12 depending ons style and colors used.
I can't think of anything else people may want.
Paul C.
EDIT:
Oh, and I would assume we coudl do shipping via priority mail envelops for larger items which is $3.20 US$ and for badges I would assume shipping would be $0.32 up to a buck depending on amount shipped and type of envelope style. Also, on their privacy pages, if anyone wants to read their privacy statement, its at http://www.earthweb.com/about_us/perm.html . Thanks.--PC

I'm not a lawyer but it's my guess that sysopt.com is a trademarked name. Believe me, I WANT us to be able to do this. I'm still talking with Earthweb folks and making progress. If we can agree on a design for one or more product types (badge, mug, shirt, etc.) we might be able to get EarthWeb to pay for the cost of creating some for those here who want them. Course, they might be willing to do them large scale and sell them through the site, but that's what I'm discussing.
In any event, regarding the permissions submission, it ended up coming back to me. EW can't grant permission until a final design is submitted for each product type. If everyone can agree on one, and the designer can email me the full sized uncompressed PSD or .TIF, we can go from there.

Mntsnow, under most situations I would be more than happy to, BUT..
A while back I drew this starcraft battle screen (terran ghost and zerg hydralisk) for a website contest. I got most of the way done (scanned in and coloring/shading) but I never got around to finishing it. I posted it on my webpage for some friends of mine to see... well, someone copied my picture, finished coloring it, and submitted it as original artwork under their name. They won 3rd place and a meager Starcraft Stratgey guide. I wrote to the contest officals, explained the situation, and they took his name down (although they sent hinm the guide already)
Long story short and I'm definitely not implying you would do this (i trust you sysopt peeps) it's just that ever since then I've been protecting my images like my own children. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Realistically speaking, this will probably never happen because Sysopt is so huge. The only time it will happen (IMO) would be if Sysopt themselves hired out a private contractor to make apparel for them and sell it on their website.

Perhaps most of you saw this but here was a humble suggestion on my part: <IMG SRC="http://www.dslextreme.com/users/cmonster3/syscasebadge.jpg" border=0>

I proposed an idea to Scott via email, 100% wide open as far as bringing it to fruition as ive the time and energy to "put it together" cheap to make, simple to mail, I have some from Directron http://www.directron.com/labels.html that are high quality and any proceeds accordingly could be donated thru a member decision which of course could be a good thing, something hung up the first attempt, can we work thru it somehow???

Great, I hope we can get this going. I think the case badges you can get done are awesome! If there was a request for T-shirts and it's soon enough (while I'm still a lady of leisure) I could help or do that. I would love to have a cute tank top with Cmonsters logo on it, (and me).

I was making progress with EarthWeb towards opening a SysOpt store (or re-opening the store actually), and selling SysOpt goods, but I haven't checked with internet.com yet. My feeling is that it won't be easy.
Granting permission to others to use the SysOpt name/logo on merchandise is a tricky area since it deprives SysOpt of revenue should we choose to sell those goods, but at the same time I definitely understand everyones desire to have some cool SysOpt stuff / case badges etc.
I'll see what I can do, but a resolution may be months away unfortunately.

Yeh that could be a problems getting em here down-under, that's US$5.95 P&H at least for a 50c badge, maybe we could arrange a bulk order should scott get through the legalities involved?

I think a lot of folks are interested, but there are some initial set-up things that would have to be done first. Once we agree on a design (I am willing to go with the flow on the design) the simplest thing would be:
1; find a person we trust implicitly to do the transactions
2; find a reasonable profit point, after all, this person will have to put some serious time/effort into setting it all up.
3; have everyone pre-order the labels and PREPAY (this is where the trust comes in)
4; when the lables come in, they can be sent to the dedicated members of the board.
