I was told by few that you shouldn’t have an ATA 100 or ATA 66 device on the same cable with a slower ATA 33 device (like CD ROM), PIO, etc... Is there any truth to that advice? I have tested the combo and found no problems what so ever.

Won't do any damage. They just all operate at the speed of the slowest drive.

The IDE controllers on most modern motherboards are able to detect the mode of the device and switch modes on the fly.
Can I mix Ultra ATA/33 and Ultra ATA/66 drives on the same cable?
Yes, a legacy ATA specification drive can coexist with an Ultra ATA/66 drive, and both devices can attain their maximum performance. However, for the Ultra ATA/66 device to attain Ultra DMA 4 mode, an Ultra ATA/66 capable cable is required. - Seagate FAQ (http://www.seagate.com/support/kb/disc/ultra_ata_66.html#8)

Thank you Fingers, I was, up until now, unaware of that http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

What if I mix a PIO Mode4 drive with a DMA Mode2 drive(both 16.6mb/sec). Does that affect the speed of either drive?
