I'm trying to find the max ram that I can use in a compaq presario 5441 system. I can't find the info on compaq's site anywhere, they just tell me what kind and how much it was shipped with. please help.

Here ya go;

Manufacturer Compaq
Model Presario 5441
Maximum Memory 384MB
Standard Memory 64MB removable
Number of Slots 3 (3 banks of 1)

64mb sticks at www.buy.com (http://www.buy.com) are $25 ea
the 128 mb is on backorder but are $32 ea

It seems as if Crucial thinks these are machine specific.

I don't know about that.

If it's SDRAM, 168pin, 3.3volt it MAY work with generic RAM

My HP 6350 was supposed to take machine specific RAM as is my Dell 4100

I put several types into both of regualr old SDRAM and it posted fine and ran with no memory errors..

Here's a neat and fast way to look up machine specific RAM, however my experience was different.. (using generic)

as usual, your mileage may vary http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif)

I looked up a Gateway GP7-550 max ram and it said 384MB, but I installed 512MB in it (when I was testing some RAM), then I realized that I had put in more than it said it could take.. but more than that I noticed that it performed (seemed like 10 times) better.
Does the max value they tell you really mean that much? (I know it probably won't take over 1.0-1.5GB .. like I would put that much in)
