I did it yesterday too!

My fix was easier, I just went into my network and borrowed the file off one of my other puters.

(still feel like a moron...)

It is kind of funny. I always check to make sure that a virus warning is valid before acting on it. Last week I got an e-mail from a friend with a fake warning, sent out the usual nasty gram telling him to check before forwarding and sent him an article about the sulfnbk.exe hoax as an example of what a hoax can do. He sent me an e-mail back saying that his wife had deleted the file on their home PC on the advice of another friend and asked how he could fix it. The good news is that he now understands why I ask people to check before forwarding.

I deleted it to Recycle Bin and attempted to forward it to SARC (Norton) for virus identification. It was rejected by SARC before it left my machinem (as non-infected file) then I saw hoax links all over the place and restored to original location. Of course, I notified ALL of my e-mail intimate contacts before finding out it was a hoax! Kind of like (but not really) telling other contacts I have a STD and doing so before finding out lab made a mistake!

It was so funny, I was reading your post Brangwen, but somehow I completely missed the hoax part, all i saw was the bold words, 'delete this file and empty your recycle bin'.

I only noticed it was a hoax after emptying the trash, and then I had to laugh at my stupidity.

but all is good now http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Quick. Search your computer for "command". Have you found any files beginning with this phrase? Chinese hackers may have broken into your computer while you were browsing the internet. This program could be used to "command" your computer to do a whole bunch of dangerous or file damaging tasks. If the wrong people gain access to this file it could be leveraged with other software ALREADY IN YOUR COMPUTER to erase ALL of your files AT ONCE.

If you don't have files on your PC that start with "command" (specifically command.com) ... THEN YOU'RE NOT USING WINDOWS!

The virus in the link above is for COMPAN.12747, not "command".

Sorry when I got this e-mail the first thing I did was goto Symantec to check it out, on finding it was a hoax I opened my e-mail proggy, to e-mail the sender that it was a hoax, 21 e-mails came in from clients/ customers who had deleted. so the motto better safe than sorry worked against them, BELT and BRACES, Always check it out first before doing anything, if it has not crashed yet, you normally have time to check out the info.
luckily in this case it was not a major if you did delete, but they could have choosen a file that could have caused major problems.

... Just thought I'd check in about this. I was sent the warning by a 'puter Guru friend whom I respect and trust. When I found the file, I moved it to my Virus folder and renamed it.

Later, I asked another Guru and learned about the hoax. (I hadn't had time to do my usual search on the virus' name at SARC, Norton or McAfee.)

Lesson learned ... Gurus are not infallable. ALWAYS double check these things.

Dude, don't try that with some Trojans,
I had one, Tried to delete it, worked. A couple seconds, then reappeared with another one, just like the other one. Ok no prob (heh heh she thinks smugly) change the extension. Hee hee! Got it! NOT! I ended up with 27 of them, all with different names and extensions I have never heard of, the only way I could tell they were there was by date and size. (Took The Cleaner to handle 'em) http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Well actually if you have a firewall then it doesnt matter if you get a torjan.

This is because the firewall in stealth mode will prevent the trojan from responding to the respective hackers probing.

I read that at grc.com.

I check out all virus warnings by running a search for the virus name in any major search engine or McAfee or Symantec's virus hoax database. Of all the virus warnings I've received via email not one of them has ever been a real virus. You can read about this one at the link below. http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/sulfnbk.exe.warning.html

That info is actually included in the Symantec hoax warning. Pretty clever though; trick people into deleting a non-infected Windows file, then send them an infected one to replace it.

The same rule applies ... don't open unknown or executable email attachments. If you recieve SULFNBK.EXE as an email attachment, it could easily be carrying the "Magistrate" virus...or any one of a hundred different virus' for that matter.

Relating to club_med's comment...just don't confuse a broadband router with a firewall because a typically configured broadband router will not stop a trojan from contacting the "owner" of the trojan.

Zone Alarm has the potential to stop that type of contact.
