The idiot me, while performing an upgrade installed the memory in a haste and actually managed to insert the dimm the other way.
The dim emitted a slight burning odor up close.
Now all the asus post keeps saying is something like:"Install cpu fan?" or other. That phrase is not even listed in the asus reporter list. Everytime I boot the red light is on and the same error message comes up.
I removed that dimm and since I had another dim of 266 DDR installed that but got the same error. I tried the Dimm in all memory slots but to no avail.
Also my cpu fan is a Thermaltake 7 Volcano 7+ that has a fan speed control attachment. Removed it out of the loop and installed the fan power connector directly to the board but still the same errors.
Did I just HOSE my system? :( Help please

RMA for everything?
Whats the liklyhood of something surviving at all from the system?
I know that the dimm is burnt but do you think I should test the other stuff?
Like vid card and cpu?
Thanx in advance

The memory may have survived. The motherboard is wacked, but you can always try clearing CMOS. Look at your manual to find out how.

The thing is the memory is the one that smelled funny(like burnt) but the mobo appears fine, I did try clearing cmos.

Since both sticks evoke the same behavior, assume that the motherboard is the goner.

Try the dimms in another board if you can.
Sadly I think Bill's right based on the evidence you've given.
The CPU and other cards are probably salvageable though.

Return for warranty replacement? That's FRAUD, folks. At least here in Europe.
(And with mistakes like these, it's easily detected. The damage done by shorting a power rail in a certain place is very characteristic, and not camouflageable.)

This dosent really have to do much with the motehrboard, but Ive come to the conclusion that i will NOT buy anything from a computer swap meet /show. Its just to much hassle for warranty returns.

ok, Video card worked in my K7SEM and the cpu also works.
Mobo fried and a 512 stick of Samsung DDR400 is fried.
I will contact the manufacturer of the board but the ram is pretty much my fault.
From my understanding there should be a protection on motherboards for issues as such, like if you insert the wrong type of memory or video card.
Not sure if that applies to this board.
On the flip side.
I got my dual Athlon XP 2100++ Tbred B system to run stable at
16*131 on air cooling.
Modified the L5 for smp and the L3 for multiplier successfully.
Can not believe what an idiot I am, oh well, win some lose some.
Time for an Nforce2 board and 2 sticks of DDR400 for dual channel operation. :)
Thanks for everyones help here.

Yea, they are notched but some mobo's dimms are deseigned poorly where you can force them in the wrong way. Ive never done it as Im uber carefull about that but have heard of it lots of times on forums and such. Cheap dimms on some mobo's I guess but its still 50/50 blaim. :t
