Hey guys,
I would like to watch my DVD's on my TV in my basement. I have that TV hooked up to a PC that serves, mp3's and whatnot. So I want to rip the DVD's I own and transfer them over the network to that PC. I know I will lose some quality, but hey its really not that important. So the question is, I do not know where to start really. Ifound a prgram thatwill rip the needed files from the DVD, aka .VOB files. So I have the Vob files, and I tried to use Flaskmpeg, but I select the files and hit enter and it crashes. Does anyone know of any other software they have had luck with to convert .vob files into playable avi files? Thanks for you help.

I was gonna suggest just running a video cable down to the basement, assuming you have tv out on your vid card (I am used to it as most laptops have this feature standard nowadays). You can also buy an AV repeater at Radio Shack if you are worried about signal degredation.
Sorry, but I have no experience ripping DVD's.
One question I had about your setup: so the TV in the basement is hooked up to a PC? And if so, why does that one not have the DVD player?

DiVx codec: http://www.divx-digest.com/software/divxcodec.html
Smartripper: http://www.riphelp.com/downloads/smart-ripper.html
Flask: http://www.flaskmpeg.net/
Download all the software
Shove the DVD into your DVD drive
Launch SmartRipper and rip the DVD onto your hard drive
Launch Flask, select your ***quality and output settings*** hit Run/Start Conversion and keep yer fingers crossed for a few hours...

On every DVD I run from my computer, there is a little notice that pops up and states something to the fact that it will not output to a TV if no anticopy hardware is not found. I havn't tried yet but will have to get around to it.
everything and anything ull ever need to know bout video on the pc. available at http://vcdhelp.com did worlds of wonders for me, got a 1 and 1/2 hour movie on a cdrw. its really easy to follow too.

someone gave me this url when i first wanted to rip dvd's and put them into divx format...told me everything i need to know..
http://www.dvdripguides.com/
when using FlaskMPEG make sure you set the codecs right (and make sure you have them) and after that go to run-->flask this file
when you do that a progress window comes up...takes about 4-5 hours on my 1.33 T-Bird with 256MB PC2100 ram...
edit - also make sure you say "open DVD", not "open file".
