I just got a ricoh MP7040a cdr/cdrw 4x write, 4x rewrite, 20x read. The only problem is that it takes about 35 min to write 640mb(even worse the testing phase took 35 min before the actually writing, another 35). This equates to 2x writing. If it were really 4x it would only take about 16 min. Could anybody tell me how to speed this up. What's the optimal cache size for my dvd-rom and my cdr/cdrw. Could the slow coping be because of my dvd-rom. Also has anybody use the program cd quick cache. I heard it works well, if so what settings should I use(hardisk size is not a problem, plenty of space).

Ummm....What software are you using, because some software like adaptec, if you use say, easy cd creator deluxe to make an audio cd. if you go through the wizard it will automatically burn at 2x, no matter what. If your using this software, you have to load the audio tracks in then hit cancel in the wizard, then when you hit the record button up at the top of the screen (little red circle) you will be able to change the speed and whether or not you want it tested before recording, etc.

you will find that if you are willing to put up with the extra time to write at 2x you will have far less errors than with 4x....i've written over 100 of them and rarely had errors untill i (upgraded?) to a 4x...needless to say i went back to 2x and have all but eliminated errors in my tasks...the 2x are even cheaper...hope this helps...cant tell you anything of the softwear though

thanks for the tip Jtcm...i still have the 4x so i may just try that and see if it works.

testing saves you from making a coaster out of a cdr but takes longer, you can disable it though just check you software. yeah I know this has already been said, It double posted so I had to say something. lol

recording speed is also a funtcion of media quality some media especially rw will only support 2x as other will support 4x, I have the same recorder but I had to update the software to get 4x did you do that and have you checked the recording speed in the settings.

i just found this out yesterday, and actually was gonna post a new post about this. you might try getting to the device manager and finding your cdr drive. goto properies then goto the settings tab. click the DMA box, then reboot. i found this out when i installed my dvd drive and it said this in the readme.txt. it increased the access time dramaticly. none of my drives, including my hdd's, has this checked. i'm slowing checking the DMA box on all my drives one by one to make sure i will have no conflicts. so far so good http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif.

I had problems burning at 4x after a mother board upgrade. I had to burn at 2x unless I wanted coasters. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
Anyway I removed the Ali busmaster drivers and used the microsoft drivers. Wella I am burning happily at 4x again.
Hope this helps.

Here is an information site that may assist.
codybear, from my readings, faster is better - if 4X gives you problems it's not the writing at 4X. This site mentions that in a couple of places. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
