I've never heard of such a thing that a driver could damage hardware - directly. What's wrong with analog ripping?

I had this problem when I switched motherboards - it is not likely the drive/cdrom driver but the IDE Busmaster driver - if you have a VIA chipset try the Highpoint driver - If you are using the standard drivers that come with Windows try the ones from the motherboard CD etc.

In the System Properties sheet Device Manager section are there any problems? Under disk controllers it should tell you what kind of driver is being used. The standard Windows 98 drivers should work okay for most controllers but if you have chipset drivers on a CD that came with the system you should probably install those.
Otherwise you should download the latest drivers for your motherboard and install those.
