When I click on a link a Microsoft Outlook, Internet Explorer gets loaded, but fails to connect/show site. IE ends up "failing to respond".

I am running Win-98, 512 meg of memory, IE6 and Outlook-98:t

Thats a fairly old outlook, has it always worked since installing IE6 or did it just start recently?

It worked fine until just recently, we had multiple power failures and I think something may have good messed up.

I have re-installed Win (Over itself), IE6 and Outlook.

The next steps are Guaranteed to work :D :p

1. FDISK
2. FORMAT
3. RE-INSTALL

Thanks AllGamer, those steps are absolute last resort. I also knew that I had those options. I was looking for some real creative options, not something that any one with a computer could figure out.

well lets suppose that it's not a OS problem/virus or whatever.

try another browser/mail software just for the test

for example MOZILLA / OPERA
www.mozilla.org
www.opera.com

then you can quickly know what's going on

and if't it's just IE/OE that is screwed, then... well have fun, cuz the best way to fix those 2 buggers is by full delete, then re-install

and you can't do that when they are so tied into the OS :p

which mean, Switch permanently to Mozilla or Opera :D

Thanks, your opinions are too drastic for me, I will continue to research elsewhere.:(

First things first - does it only hang when opening a url from outlook or does it do the same thing when in the browser alone?

Try an ie repair first - Add / remove programs in control panel - select ie then select repair option.

If that doesnt work try installing ie6 service pack 1 - thats fixed a few problems for us.

Allgamer just doesnt like IE thats why hes trying to convert you to the darker-side of Mozzie-illa

Did you add any new memory before it happened by any chance?

Only hangs on link/url from within Outlook
No new memory
Did repair of IE, but problem still persists.:(

dude... you should open your mind to new alternative, and not being caught in the vicious MS reign of chaos

DumbFusious also say, have tried Moz, and Do NOT like:p

Haha nice one

Sounds like internet explorer is not the default browser then.

Bum-fuscious say - Aha that makes things clearer - try this fix and let me know if its fixed either way

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;258165

Agree somewhat with allgamer - used to use navigator for years but ie has come a long way and isnt bad now - when netscape 7 came out it was slower than a snail on temazepan - mozilla is not bad but just doesnt function/integrate as well as ie and its slower.

Thanks omendata, but IE is the default browser. It is the one which hangs and does not respond, when a link in Outlook is clicked.:confused:

Quit all running programs.

Click Start, and then click Run.

In the Open box, type regsvr32 urlmon.dll and then click OK.

Your should receive a message confirming that registration has been succesful. Click OK. (Quite often just registering urlmon.dll does the trick.)

Please note there is a space after the "2" in regsvr32

Repeat the above sequence for each of the following:
regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 Shell32.dll
regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll

Restart the computer.
=============================
If no joy:
In the Start menu, point to Programs, and then click either Windows Explorer
Click View, click Folder Options, and then click File Types.
In the Registered File Types box, click URL:File Transfer Protocol, and then click Edit.
In the Actions box, click Open, and then click Edit.
The Application Used To Perform Action box may display the path to your Web browser as a short file name. Type the path to your Web browser using the full file name. For example, change:

"c:\progra~1\intern~1\iexplore.exe"

-to-

"c:\program files\internet explorer\iexplore.exe" (including the quotation marks).
Click OK, and then click Close.
Repeat steps for the following registered file types:

* URL:Gopher Protocol
* URL:Hypertext Transfer Protocol
* URL:Hypertext Transfer protocol with Privacy

Click Close.
======================================
Some people have noted that replacing urlmon.dll or oleaut32.dll with the versions that came with their operating system has helped. I would not extract those from your cabs except as a last resort. Or perhaps next-to-last. Last I’d try installing 98 overtop itself.

Good luck. :t

Oops dont know what i was thinking of there - working too hard.

Yep replacing the above files might work - good advice.

Does it hang on all urls or only ones of a certain length >72 characters?

Success thanks to Cluedo:t

I registered all of the files named, that did not solve problem.

Re-booted PC then re-associated IE with the the file types listed and links in Outlook started to load properly again.

Thanks everyone for your help:t
