I received this e-mail from a friend the other day and just thought I would pass along
the warning...I have verified with my sister who is in the Nassau County Probation Dept. that this scam is for real.

I received a telephone call last evening from an individual identifying himself as an AT&T Service technician who was conducting a test on our telephone lines. He
stated that to complete the test I should touch nine (9), zero (0), the pound sign (#) and then hang up. Luckily, I was suspicious and refused. Upon contacting the telephone company, I was informed that by pushing
90#, you give the requesting individual full access to your telephone line, which allows them to place long distance telephone calls billed to your home phone number. I was further informed that this scam has been
originating from many of the local jails/prisons. I have also verified this
information with UCB telecomm, Pacific Bell, MCI, Bell Atlantic, GTE, and NYNEX. Please beware. DO NOT press 90# for ANYONE. The GTE
Security Dept. requested that I share this information with EVERYONE I KNOW. PLEASE pass this on to everyone YOU know. If you have mailing lists and/or newsletters from organizations you are connected with, I
encourage you to pass on this information to them, too."

I got this, last week, I think. My sister-in-law said she had gotten it several weeks ago.

I don't know if this really happened, or if it's just another scare like the "VIrus" scare letters we all get.

Anyway, you'll be somewhat foolish to do somwething like that for someone on the phone.

That'd be almost as silly as making out over the phone when you're out of town, huh?

(did i say that out loud?)

OOPPPPPSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!

Never Mind!

Yes, these types of scams are going around here also. Someone actually tried it a few weeks ago on the receptionist at the company for which I work. Her awareness thwarted him.

I should have thought of posting it when it happened to us. (shoulda woulda coulda!)

Thanks for making everyone aware Susan.
