Hi there. I just ran into the same problem myself and here's what worked for me:

1. Click Start>Search>for files and folders
2. Type explorer in the "Search for files or folders named" field.
3. Select your local hard drive (usually C http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif from the dropdown list.
4. Click "Search Now"

The computer will return several windows and internet explorers. The one you want is in the C:\Winnt directory. Double click it and you will see that it already opens my computer and your C:\ drive by default.

Thats the best way I know, but if you don't want your C:\ drive opened, then I'm afraid I can't help you. Perhaps someone else has a solution to that problem.

Best of luck.

try this maybe:

This is how I did it im WinME, should be pretty much the same I guess for 98SE and NT:

Wherever you have a shortcut to Windows Explorer, right-click on it and pick properties.

A box should pop up titled Windows Explorer Properties

There are two Tabs at the top, General and Shortcut, it should open on shortcut.
What you want to do is modify the target line with the below options.

If you want it to start on a particular drive:
C:\WINDOWS\EXPLORER.EXE /n,/e,C:\ for C:\ drive
or D:\ E:\ etc.

If you want it to start on My Computer.
C:\WINDOWS\EXPLORER.EXE /n,/e,

Thank you techwriter for such a fast response. I tried what you said and it worked but as you already guessed I didn't want my c: drive to open. I ended up using bhess's solution. Once again the many helpful people here at sysopt came to the rescue.

Thank you,
John
