Is it just me or does the Chaintech on-board audio just plain stink? I have the 7JNS board with a 2800+ and I need the audio for basic audio editing...it won't work. It is that C-media set. All static with Sonar XL. I have done all sorts of tweaking to the latency and audio settings within Sonar and all I get is static...additionally I hear pops and cracks during game play...should I just return this board or get a new sound card? Whadaya think yall? The board itself is pretty nice. I have access to a A7N8X Deluxe, should I pick that up?

Only good onboard audio is that of the Nvidia Soundstorm, as found on nforce 2 boards such as the Asus a7n8x and epox 8rda+ (which although not meeting Soundstorm certification is essentailly the same hardware)
Otherwise get yourself a hardware soundcard in there, even something cheap like a soundblaster PCI512 will do you better

If the audio supports WDM drivers, Sonar is generally seemless and easy to use. I don't need high end audio cards to work with basic HDD recording, sampling, and MIDI.
Unless you want to want to spend the $300+ and get me a high end audio card! :p
I don't plan on spending that much money. I can get an Audigy2 card for 80 bones new. I may do that...I thought on-board audio had improved, but live and learn...thanks for the words...

the only weakness of the 7njs is the AC97 sound
if u need sound, get an audigy2

Get the asus a7n8x deluxe 'at your disposal' next best thing to the audigy 2 and a hell of a lot cheaper

Yeah, I have the asus A7N8X deluxe. Sound is excelllent. Took my Sounblaster live mp3+ and sold it-its that good. Not one driver issue no pops or click sounds (which my sblive did make) and it has yet to let me down. Also EAX support! I hear one of the reasons the Asus nforce2 cost more IS the built in audio is better. But who really knows, non of the manufacturers are telling specs. LOL;)

Hang on a second folks...read this thread:

And keep in mind that if audio is bad, there's a good chance it's driver-related.

The audio on the 8rda+ is essentially the same hardware except 6.1 dont come as standard, and its missing some amplication feature or other that i would never use anyhows, hence it fails Soundstorm Certification. FO ryour average joe though, still the same thing.
I reckon the biggest factor in the prce of the A7n8x would prolly be the extra LAN header and the SATA

My onbaord sound works very well.
As a matter of fact, It is 6.1 capable and yes it is AC97.
i would recommend getting better divers because that's what I did when mine was crackling and popping.
It's the onboard sound that comes with the MSI KM2M combo L motherboard.
I reallt really like it too:p

Shucks, I did update the driver as well. I was feeling good about it, but no luck...it plays audio files swell, but with Sonar it is a nightmare.
I am going to check out the ASUS board and I will post my progress...thanks for all the replies. Nice to see a board that actually gets used by people...right on!
