I need to get true DOS, so I can run a firmware patch for my DVD-ROM and make it region free, but I'm running w2k.

I had something like this for WindowsME, but I got rid of it, and can't find it again, let alone work out if it will work for w2k.

btw, this is for a friend actaully, I've allready done my dvd drive (wme), and can't rememeber how to do this in w2k!!!

Cheers,

Pat.

Just use a Win98 Boot disk. That's how I update my firmware and BIOS in Win2k...

Like NDC said, use win9x boot disk, just be sure the patch you have is on floppy too,(If your fs is ntfs) as win9x is unable to access partitions of such type.

Since i'm the friend ( http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif ) pdm is talking about so I suppose I should elaborate.

I already tried the Windows 98 boot disk but it wouldn't boot from it. It got up to the system summary screen thing then stalled. Pressing Enter made it scan the disk but that's about it.

There may be a fault with the disk or the files but I can't say for sure either way. I'll be making another tomorrow (I don't have access to a Win98 system till then) and will try that.

On a related note: is the uninstall executable (uninst.exe?) on the disk necessary for it to function? I removed it because the firmware and updater wouldn't fit otherwise and it seemed the least likely to be used.

No it isn't necessary for the Win98 boot disk to function. Someone must've copied it there by mistake or for some particular reason...

Here's where you can download a boot disk incase you're unable to get your hands on one:

Oh my! What did I do to that other disk? There's twice as many files on this new one.

Thanks for the link NDC.
