<begin RAVE (<-- changed to rave for Joel's benefit)>
Although I did have a cable modem while I was in college (lived off campus), I've only had access to dial-up for the last 6 months. But ADSL is available here in Sausalito and I signed up for 1.5Mbit/384k. WOW IS IT FAST.. I routinely peak at the 1.5Mbit limit, especially when transferring multiple files (usually it's the server that's the bottleneck, not my connection). I downloaded a 32MB file today in 3 minutes http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif, and just about every page on the web, including large images and streaming video, pops up like they're cached locally.. Some people say that Pacbell's DSL bites, and that you'll never see 1.5Mbit, but so far it has been fantastic for me.

I thought this was going to be a rant? Sure sounds like a rave to me.... Try this instead:
<RANT>
So, while Scott has had cable available to him in college, and had to go 6 months with dialup just recently (my heart goes out), and now has ADSL, I've been on 14.4-26.4 connections during that period. My current area _MIGHT_ have @Home in a few weeks, but then again, it could be a month and a half since I've been given two different dates. So who knows when I'll actually be able to get cable while Scott goes on about his 10MB/minute downloads. You make me sick, Scott. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
</rant>
Now, that's how a real rant is done. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

Scott... too bad you moved up here. If you had gone to Huston you could have gotten VDSL which is trialing at a min of 20mbps <g>.

Heheh yeah, but 1.5Mbps is a VAST improvement over 24k-33.6k http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif. I'll be happy with it for at least a couple years http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif.

A cable modem in college? You lucky guy. Now you've got to put it to good use and host some UNREAL games (just kidding). Is it one those new G.Lite modems? If not could you tell me the relative hardware, installation, and monthly costs. I second Joel Kleppinger's opinion, you make me sick and will get no sympathy for your dial-up days(a whole six months huh, ohh how did you manage). Well have fun with your new toy.

<sadness>
North NJ will never have Cable nor xsdl http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif
well no one cares about us, its just the major citys like San Fran and Houston. we only have NEW YORK CITY 14 miles from us http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif
It's Not Fair!!! No ones even making plans for us!! If anyone does, theyll have a monopoly over the North Jersey area *winks at the Cable and xsdl companies*
</sadness>
I've had DSL for about 4 months now. Can I just say: "IT ROCKS"!!!

PacBell charges $39/month for 384kbps-1.5Mbps, plus $10 for the ISP, for a total of $49/month, plus the modem itself is about $200.
For 1.5Mbps - 6Mbps down, 384kbps up, it's $129/month for the line and $70/month for the ISP, plus you get 5 IP's.

Of course, for all that ADSL must rock, Scott still depends on little ole Joel and his faithful dialup connection so he can send mail. 4 emails to PacBell, and still no SMTP access. Yes, yes, ADSL definitely rocks. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Just ordered my Pac Bell ADSL line today! Unfortunately, they are SWAMPED with requests and I'll probably be lucky to have it by Thanksgiving...
Now I just need to justify the extra $30/mo to the wife....
