I can purchase a western digital 40 gig 7200 rpm HD for $140.00, or a seagate 40 gig 5400 rpm for $104.00.

What does anyone think about the difference in speed?

The $$$ sounds good!

I dont know if I would notice the difference or not?

The difference in speed won't amount to too much unless you have it on a raid board. Then, it does have some faster responce. Most of the benchmarks we see don't actually help us that much in realtime applications.

What does matter is, those prices you have listed. Here are some that are a little better:

Western Digital CAVIAR 3.5 inch EIDE Hard Drive 2MB Buffer WD400BB 40GB 7200RPM Ultra ATA 100 $120.00

Western Digital CAVIAR 3.5 inch EIDE WD400AB 40GB Hard Drive 5400rpm ata 100 $95.00

IBM 40GB 7200RPM #IC35L040AVER07 Deskstar 60GXP Ultra ATA/100 8.5ms Average Seek Time $126.00

Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 60 Ultra DMA 100 40GB 5T040H EIDE Hard Drive 3.5" form 7200rpm $124.00

Maxtor 40.9GB EIDE Hard Drive 3.5" form 5400rpm ATA 100 $93.00

RPM does make a noticeable difference.

IBM drives run hot.

I'm a fan of Western Digital.

I like to shop (and buy) at www.priceline.com (http://www.priceline.com) .

Bovon,

Maybe ,if you could give me an example of one kind of benchmark compering the 2 different rpms. Are we talking mil-seconds in opening a program?

Thanks for the prices!!

They are much better. I was looking at buy.com.

Wing7788 has a post that covers so much of what I am looking for.

I wish I would have seen it before I posted this.

Though the question slightly differs.

He has recieved alot of great answers http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

jkac123, I'll try to find the benchmark I was referred to when I asked the same (almost) question nearly a month ago. I went on and ordered a 7200 rpm drive, because at the time, I still had not settled the issue in my mind on whether to get a raid board or not, as well as possible future benefits from 7200 rpm drives. I do have friends that had told me that they have tried both, and didn't see a 'lot' of speed difference in real time. Certainly, there will be some...even maybe a difference from drive to drive. Overclocking sometimes makes a difference in benchmarks. I'll see what I can find.

There was a sizable thread on this recently...I still say go for the faster drive.

I'm actually NOT a fan of WD. The three that i owned failed within 2 years. My frends that owned them also told me about them failing.

Oh, you want hd recommendations?

There is nothing better than an IBM drive. I have the 45gb IBM Deskstar model - it rocks. MANY people have this model.
