I have put together a PC for the first time despite trouble with the first Graphics card I am now away. On entering the BIOS, it recognises the HDD as a 180 Gb (it is an IBM 180 Gb IDE HDD) but on formatting the disk with XP Pro, and running the system it only recognises thart the HDD is 135 Gb. What have I done wrong? Any ideas?

you need to have service pack 1 to recognize 48-bit lba or else you gotta hack the registry.

Can I just download this from the Microsoft website? And if I can will it mean that I have to reformat my Hard Drive from scratch and reinstall Windows XP or will it automatically recognise the difference? Pleas Help!

you mean you didn't install SP1? download that first. it's a biggie.
is this your primary drive or not? yeah, you're gonna have to reformat the drive because you'll have to repartition it.
did you use the setup utility that came with the drive? You may have to use that to partition and format the drive, BEFORE you install windows xp.

mmmhhhh.... mostlikely you'll still not able to see beyond 130 Gb even with SP1
the only way to use Full Capacity is via Partition Magic and similar software
i have multiple 160 Gb HDDs with and without the patch Win2k/XP is still buggy when trying to deal with DATA beyond 130 Gb
the best OS for large HDD is LINUX

Well thanks to you all I think I have solved the problem. I Did not re-format the HDD. I downloaded the SP1 patch from Microsoft. I then used Partition Magic to increase the size of my single Partition to include the extra formatted but un-allocated space. IWindows now recognises a total HDD capacityof 172 GB. So I have lost 8GB. But in the greater scheme of things this was easier than starting again. Does anyone think that this would compromise the performance? (in terms of speed)
IWhen I fill this HDD I will probably move to SATA as this MoBo supports SATA Raid. Any comments?

You didn't lose 8GB - it was never there to begin with.
