The best players aren't free but you can try

Go down to your local Video Rental Store and rent any Warner Brothers DVD. Every one comes with a program called PC Friendly DVD that will ask to be installed when you insert the DVD.

It's a great software decoder that I used before I got my Radeon card with the hardware decoder.
