Hi..

This is a intermitent problem which has just recently started to occur,

About 1 time out of every 6 - 10 fresh boots my will only get as far as the xp pro loading screen before totally not responding anymore. (this is the screen right before password entry)

At this stage I have no option but to restart the pc, then it offers me, some boot options etc... i pick.. boot in normal mode each time... then every thing is fine for a while before crashing again a day or so later at the same spot...

Can any of you guys tell me why this is happening?
And how to correct it?

Also am I doing the right thing by choosing the option "normal boot" after restarting again???

Any feedback what so ever on this is welcomed

thanks

That's where drivers are loading during startup. Update drivers for all hardware.

Normal mode is fine to start after a lockup, but try Safe Mode next time.

Frankly, it's no biggie. Try leaving the PC on and using Standby instead of shutting down every day.

yeah i agree with Bill sounds like a Hardware issue

try upgrading all the drivers as Bills said

and if that fails

start removing hardware Devices until you can figure out which one is causing the Hung

Good advice, i had a massive boot up issue with a win 98 machine that lasted months once, i did this and what would you know, dodgy CDRW causing it

It probably is a devise driver as the other guy's have said but.............. if you (or anybody else for that matter) would like to know what's going on behind the cheap imitation of "knight rider" boot screen, open your Boot.ini file & after the operating name press "Space" Forward slash then type SOS (as shown below) then save it. This will then dispense of the XP boot up & show what's goin on behind closed doors! to revert back, simply delete what you have added. easy peasy.

[Operating Systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /sos

Good advice, Dave. He will first have to "Show hidden files" in Explorer > Tools > Options > View if he wants to find BOOT.INI though.

this is precicely why i always said it's pointless to try and change the default boot logo for those 3 secs it takes to boot

they should be checking out what Windos is loading instead, like i do

If it is in fact a driver problem or a device problem then you obviously want to find out which item is causing it. If you go to the start button and click run, type: msconfig and remove all the items under the start-up tab and add them again one at a time ,rebooting in between, until your problem reoccurs, you should be able to figure out where your problem lies. There are other things in there you can manipulate as well to help fix your problem. Good Luck!

Welcome to SysOpt, Richard the First!

Usually, those items load only after the desktop appears, but it's worth a shot. If it is software, it's likely Services where the problem lies. In MSCONFIG, he can Hide Microsoft Services and try booting without those and add them one at a time.

Unfortunately, the problem is intermittant and these methods may fail to turn up anything at all unless it happens every boot.

Hi there,

Thanks for all the imput,

After reading all your replies i,m not too sure what route to take, I guess my main worrie was it being my hardrive or somet that would stop me from getting to my work.

One thing that did make a lil sense was bigjak's comment regarding a dogey cdrw, well mine has been fine for the last 2 years, but just resently I seem to be getting errors, underuns and a lotta waste, while burning. This happens i'd say 1 in 3 burns with only nero running, this has also baffled me..

Could this be it? Cdrw on its way out?

Also the fact that the crash is intermitent does make it hard to troubleshoot.. but what i was wondering is..
what does this tell you guys? (intermitent)
why would it only crash say once in ten boots?
what are the chances of it getting more frequent?

soz bout all the questions...

Well if i were you i would disconnect the CDRW for a day or two and see if anything happens at all. If the crashes still occur intermittently than it aint the drive
