'lil help here.......

...to OC a 1.4 266 cpu. I have an MSI k7-S MB and 512 2100 ddr.
Can I get anything dramatic out of it? I have changed a few settings in BIOS that have it clocked at 1.53. thats with the easy bios changes that were apparent. Anything else I can do to push it more? And please forgive my n00bn3ss

hmmm then question #2. where do I get the 1700+ B chip? I am looking on sites that sell them but they all seem to be the A chip

most of the pl;aces I have been looking the last few minutes (links from this site, mostly) show what the manufactures code is. But they all seem to be the B chip. i like the idea of a cheap chip that can be easily OC'd to run at much higher speeds since Im broke and know very little about OC'ing. But I could sneak 70 bux and she wouldnt even notice.......if I can find the right chip.

naaaa...I'm not broke, she just *****es when I spend friviously on pc stuff. and I would rather spend time messing with my pc. It has far less requirements of me:D

ok.... so I screw up my MB, it wont post. So I come runnin to sysopt for help and I get it (yeah :o)..... things seem to be ok but then, I try to play PlanetSide. the launcher doesnt work. I get a windows error. I try to launch other games. (only have a few) but none will launch. They are all onlne games that initiate with a launcher.


any clues?

What changes did you make to get it to boot? What OS are you using?
Can you post your system specs again?

OK. Sorry I don't know, but one thing is for sure, you can always start over and reload everything in the proper order. Start with BIOS settings.

ok. imma try to put it in a nutshell. I was overclocking my pc. Went too far had to clear CMOS several times even.heh.... but then all of a sudden that stops working and board wont POST. You guys tell me to take it out of the case and pull everything off of it and try it. I did and it worked. BUT in between that time I had pulled my cpu fan and heatsink off my cpu to see if I had burned up my processor. I hadnt but now I needed to reseal it. anyway......I get home from work after reading the suggestions here about what to do, I was so caught up in putting it together that I FORGOT I had taken the heatsink off. Turns out it was ok. It was running a bit warmer then normal (lol) but not too bad really. I figurered I had gotten lucky. It was running around 65 c
which is only about 5 c more then before. So I got brave and started OC'ing it again and it was going good. I was able to change bios settings from 133/33 up to 144/36 and was running around 1.53 mgh on a 1.4 266 cpu. But I finally went and got some arctic silver to reseal the sink on the cpu. I put it on turn on pc its running 7 degrees cooler. GREAT Now I can go in a nd try pushing the settings in BIOS a little. Uh Oh! now I cant change it at all with out a freeze up on start up. WTF? all I did was put arctic silver on it. I didnt change anything else now I can OC AT ALL. That doesnt sound right I should be able to atleast do what I was doing before right?

512 2100 ddr
G3 Ti200
maxtor 7200 40 gig

Did you run it without the heat sink or just no thermal compound? If you ran it without the heat sink then you probably got the cpu much hotter then the thermistor in the socket actually reported. The CPU could be a bit frazzled. If you used too much A3 that could cause a problem also. Forget the O/Cing and be happy it still works at all.

I had the heatsink on. It ran very stable at 71C too. Before I put the arctic silver on. Now the temp is lower but it wont run at higher rate it makes no sense. And I cant stop OC'ing I .....I just cant.




oH and I was very careful with the arctic silver I am sure I didnt use too much very thin ,even layer on cpu and same on HS
