I build a few wimpy machines to sell.

The Norton just ain't getting it, on shutdown you must cut off the machine with the power switch.
Remove Norton and it cuts off automatically.

Whay about Dr.Solomon or McAfee , I'd rather not use the freebie cuz of limited updates.

Personally I don't care for Anti-Virus software on MY machine cuz I've been blasted by the script kiddies and the Chinese viurses several times and the protection afforded by them was NOT effective..

Need to order it asap
Speedy replies appreciated

Have you tried www.cai.com (http://www.cai.com) Inoculate Personal Edition is free, and they have great update track record. I have been using it for past 6-7 months on both win98 and win2k. They update virus definitions every week!

Hey Doc --

I've been using Trend's PC-cillin for a year now and it has been great!! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Up-dates almost weekly!

Catches everything and more than NAV!

I got a hold of a free copy with my MoBo, but I see that it costs otherwise. (I haven't had to pay for it or any of the up-grades in the last year! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif )

I have only heard good things about InoculateIT. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I haven't had any good experience's with McAfee and only have bad things to say about them. NAV has been good, but cost's too much and doesn't catch enough! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif And NAV has turned into a real resource HOG!! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif

I've also heard many good things about Panda, but I haven't had a need to buy it or personally use it.

DrVette,
Good morning. Personally, I cannot stand Norton. I have used McAfee for a long time now and have had no problems. As I never leave any programs running in background (except firewall) I have no issues with interference by TSRs. The virus def updates from McAfee are timely and free. Oh, and by the way, be careful removing Norton from system. This can be tricky at times. If you have ANY problems, call Norton's support and have them do the complete removal from registry, etc...they're used to getting these calls.
Have a WONDERFUL day! :-)

Another vote for Innoculate IT. Here's hoping it remains free.

EDIT: BTW, the updates are free as well. I have never been charged anything or notified that I eventually will be.

Check out AntiVirus Expert (http://www.avx.com) . These guys bought AVP (AntiViral Pro Toolkit), which has always worked great and will have virus updates well before anyone else.

Yet Another vote for InoculateIT.
Works great.
Been using it at home and a few machines at work for about 6 months with NO probs.
Seeing that you said No freebees though, check out; www.avx.com (http://www.avx.com)

and
www.antivirus.com (http://www.antivirus.com) (TrendMicro)

Ive used both without Probs.

Still though - InoculateIT

Just found this one and it is great. I even like it better than the Inoculate.

Were you using norton 2001? I am and it is the first anti virus I have found that does not slow the machine down or have conflicts with Zonealarm. I have used Macaffe and pccillin (which btw, was like a sieve) and always had glitches.......that was a while ago tho, they may have better versions now.

I have found AVG to be great. It finds stuff when Norton's Anti Virus 2001 did not. I tryed McAfee's Pro version, Inoculate It, PC-Cillan, Norton's 2001, all these did not stop all the stuff from getting into the system. AVG has a free version, constant upgrades (automatic) Can even burn CD's without disabeling the virus detecting software.

By the sounds of it, I should go check out Innoculate IT.

PC-Cillin Doc...catches them all and very resource friendly....stay away from McAfee if possible...they use to be ok buy the bigger they got the worse they became which is kinda like Norton's story also

InoculateIT PE is definetly the one. Free software, free auto-updating, and free 24/7 tech support. I personally couldn't recommend anything that you have to pay for which is a reversal of the norm.

i've been using inoculate IT for almost 1 year now and al i can say is that it is pretty cool. free!!! free updates!!! uhmm... what more could u ask for from an anti-virus? unless of course i got all these viruses that inoculate IT can't detect... in any case it does what it's supposed to do...

Inoculate IT hasn't had a problem with Zonealarm on my PC, and I cannot tell it has caused a slowdown, even on my laptop, where it would be most noticeable (PII 233.) I do prefer to use Zonealarm and Innoculate IT together, since Innoculate IT let one virus in thru e-mail.

I have been using Mcafee at home for about 3 years now and only got infected once. That was my fault I did not download the new definitions for about 3 months.

Oh well I wanted to rebuild and change things around anyway.

Pcillin here. Disable the TSR and it works like a charm. O, and it can be slightly difficult to use as well.

OK, after much careful and diligent consideration, I've made a choice.

PC-Cillin

The first thing going for it was the ol pal Cody first suggested it.

The second, customers usually don't trust "Free" stuff especially a Anti-Virus software.

I too wonder what is the inspiration behind folks working hard on a product, then giving it away FREE.

When they get tired of working over the viurs definitions are we out of luck and have to rush and purchase one ?

Thanks to all for your input, it is most helpful when we work together "en masse"

I have PCCillin but I just don't like it. Their download servers are slow most of the times, ...I just don't like it..

I'll try InnoculateIt and see how it works..!

Hey Doc --

Look at the 4th post (3d reply)!

Eagle1 -- I'm not sure what is happening with your PC-cillin, but mine is fast, even with a 24k dial-up connection. (But like I mentioned earlier, InnoculateIT is good too!)
