Why would you want 2.1 speakers to go with a 5.1 sound card, when you can have a set of these speakers (http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm?page=products/details&CRID=2&CONTENTID=5047&countryid=19&languageid=1) , from Newegg.com (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=manufactory&catalog=60&manufactory=1080&DEPA=1&sortby=14&order=1) , for $67 , and with a $20 rebate = $47 :t
And comes with Loader Base , too! :p

But dont you then need to splash out on a digital box or soem such thing to use 5.1?
(i'm not up on speakers, Stereo has always worked well enough for me)

The Z-640 that Rocketman suggested would be a great choice, I have their bigger brother the z-680 which are very nice. I have also heard the z-640 and they sound great.
That is what I would suggest and for $47 you can't go wrong.

No. Your amplifier and sensitivity of your speakers determine how loud they will play. In fact if you go to a cleaner less compressed sound with a better sound card; the speakers you have will actually not sound as "loud". A compressed more distorted signal will sound louder than an uncompressed lower distortion one will even at the same relative volume.

that would be digital speaker . With 5.1 you have a sub and speakers, you just connect them up as normal.
Advice on speakers, biggest you can get :p I too just a stereo - no need for anything more, although I am thinking of getting 5.1 for my DVD player.

So i could go out and buy a set of 5.1's and just hook em up to a bog standard soundstorm and it'll work straight off?
BTW Bryan what mobo on-board sound are you using? If its an nforce 2 board with soundstorm dont bother getting an Audigy, the difference between the two isnt great and certainly not the large outlay of readies

c-media, soyo kt400 drag ultra plat, will the sound card be much of a difference?

Is there a problem with your speaker volume? or you just want better sound at a higher volume? just checking...
C-Media is a mediocre sound choice. Common AC'97 sound and cheap for manufacturers to sport on mobo's. Its adequate for websurfing and office use. But falls very short to the other choices mentioned here. If you have cheap speakers now , then a set of good 2.1, 4.1 or 5.1 speakers will make a difference. A better sound card and speakers to benefit a new sound card will just "make your day" if you like music , movies or gaming. I would buy the speakers first then upgrade the sound card later if the budget is tight. Select the speakers for the sound card you plan on upgrading to later. IMHO :t
