Hey guys, something Odd happend

i was Adding 1 too many Fans to my System, and now my PC wont start

I suspect it's the Mobo, but it could be the CPU

not having another AMD cpu, nor another AMD mobo handy, i'm just guessing right now

The CPU looks fine, no sign of Burned up, on either side

Altic Silver and fan was applied TT Volcano 9

as per the Mobo, well lets just say we used all the 3 pins fans connectors avaiable

and some sort of electronic smell came up when the system just started

so as i said, seems more like a Mobo burn out :p

i guess is time for an RMA ;) it's still under warranty

Just wanted to hear some comments and or any other means of visually / smelling ispecting the Mobo for sign of KILLED :D

more updates tomorrow after i test it on a buddy system

is too bad everything at work is Intel based

If say for example, the Mobo is good, but the CPU is bad

would the Mobo still give the beeps for the Missing Video card or the long beeps for the missing RAM ?

if i remember properly the Mobo will do absolutely Nothing if you don't have a CPU in the slot

 :t

Probably won't hear nothing if cpu is fried or mobo, depending on the mobo and age its safer to use the psu plugs than the mobo, less taxing.

Could it be power supply?

did you burn out a fan and now mobo is shorted out?

plugged one in backwards once. same basic scenario. WHEW!!! stinky

( quoting my wife ) :D

Sounds to me like the MB, time to get out the old bugle and blow taps over it.

Actually, I'm not sure this is entirely true for all mobo/CPU combinations. The reason I say this is that I recently swapped PSU's on the main (AMD) household PC, and accidentally bumped the Slot A CPU out of position. My recollection is that the mobo beeped pretty loudly about that before I figured it out and reseated the CPU properly.

You may want to wait for somebody else to confirm this before acting on it.

Sounds like you might have tried to power the Volcano 9 from a 3-pin motherboard fan plug. Never do that, and if you'd read the Volcano 9 instructions, you'd have known that. Those (and really any other heavy duty fan too) need to be plugged into a 4-pin PS connector, not the motheboard. I hope you didn't fry your motherboard, but you might've. :(

When my 1700+ processor went bad... My machine would power up, but nothing would show up on the screen, no beeps or anything... Just all the fans would turn on and thats it. However, a bad mobo could do the same thing, depending on what exactly went wrong with it. From your scenario, I would hypothesize that its the mobo that went bad, since it happened after you hooked up a fan to the mobo header.

well after detail test, using a buddy system, i found out the MOBO is fine :x

but the CPU died somehow.

so time to get a Barton 3000 i guess :D

perfect excuse ;)

Anyhow yeah i used up all the 4 three pins connectors for FAN on the MOBO

cuz i wanted to check the RPMs, since i put all Temp automatic fans

but well, i guess i'll have to hook them up now to the PSU and run a single line to the speed pin instead to do what i want.

anyways

thanks for your isnight guys :t

Wierd, sounds similar to what happened to my 1700+.... Except I didn't smell anything burning, i was just browsing sysopt when my system froze, and would not post after that... CPU wasn't burned or anything, it just went bad all of a sudden.

yeah i guess the PowerSurge killed my CPU

Surge as in 4 Fans on the Mobo drawing way too much power.

and the electrical noise in the circuit board caused by the fans did something to the CPU area of the Mobo or something

Sounds like them fancy fans were sucking too much juice. It seems weird that the cpu would go as a result though, but as I am sure you know, the amperage goes up as the voltage drops.

yes yes, i was expecting that to happen to the Mobo, but to my surprised it affected the CPU instead :x

i've heard about a lot of Mobos dying due that, but the CPU always survived.

well i just had the exact opposite :p

One thing i keep pondering is.

Why in the world Mobo companies put that many 3 pins FAN connectors on their mobo for, if 9 times out of 10 is known to cause problem, when all of them are used :D

they should have a big red warning, "Do not use all the plugs at the same time" :t

Good point AG. Seems more and more it's a case of "you pays yo money and takes yo chances". Quality used to be a virtue with free enterprise, but anymore you can't even get good quality in a tooth brush. When I was young I used to think that by the turn of the century cars would be built to last a lifetime. We certainly have the technology to do that. Today's engineers instead use their advanced technological skills to design products to self destruct when the warrenty expires and the concept of making parts and products that can be repaired is laughable. My old Mercedes is 33 years old and still an excellent car, but I wouldn't buy a new one at half the price.

I hear that - new car prices on the Beemers and Mercedes are astronomical - heck you can buy a house in some parts (certainly no here in so. CA) for their purchase price

- - my MBZ 300SE is 13 years old, bought it with 67k, now at 133k, best car buy I've ever made - in fact - I've never even bought a new car - stick with older BMW, Mercedes and the older Porsches if you're mechanically inclined, they're actually pretty easy to work on if you make sure you find the right discounts on parts.....
