Linksys Router Prblems

I recently got a Linksys 4 port router or my cable modem at home. Now before I had a Sygate proxy server running on my system along with a switch to split the cable modem. So I put the cable modem and router up and nothing. I cannot get to it from my computer. So I try my roomies. Works perectly. So I do some research on mine. It seems I can pull an IP from DHCP, but I cannot et on the net. I cannot ping the router , but I can renew DHCP fine. I can ping 127.0.0.1 fine, but nothing else. So I unistalled TCP/IP and reinstalled . nothing. I tried a new net card, nothing. I have a link and DHCP works, but no Net http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif Does anyone have any ideas? I am running WinME, AMD 700, 348 megs RAM ... Please

dump all your TCP/IP and networking stuff out of networking properties reboot and reinstall you NIC drivers
thats what I had to do the first time to get it to see the linksys

hanks .. but no luck .. same symptoms. I thought it could be a cable problem? Has anyone ever heard o a cable suddenly dying? literally one second it works fine .. and next second it only half works .. aka only DHCP no net. Well any other ideas I would be very grateful.

If you reset the router to default, you should be able to access it through your browser @ http://192.168.1.1. (at least all of them I've seen have this default).

Maybe you need to remove the old proxy software? Also, make sure that both your PC and the router aren't sharing the same computer names.
You also want to make sure you aren't hard-coding your IP/DNS info in the TCP/IP settings in windows for that NIC. Set it up to be assigned.
You may have to release the IP addy that was assigned by wingate? I have never used it so I am not sure how it works. To release it, (in win98/95) goto start-->run and type WINIPCFG then click on release and renew. In Windows 2000, goto a command prompt and type IPCONFIG -Release and then IPCONFGI -Renew .
You can also just type IPCONFIG by itself and that will tell you if you are assigned an IP by the router (it should say that your IP is 192.168.1.1xx and the gateway is 192.168.1.1).

From the actualy problems you are having, it sounds like your have your name servers assigned wrong (DNS). Can you ping the router?

If you can ping 127.0.0.1, that is one of two things... either your old proxy settings... check IE connection settings, also, TCP?IP settings, DNS should be off, Wins should be off, and there should be no gateway, and obviously, DHCP. The other thing that IP could be is the IP for Norton E-Mail protection, if you have Norton Anti-Virus installed then that is most likely it, this will not interfere with the Linksys... and yes, it is a possibility that you have a bad cable, I have seen a computer pull an IP and NetBios resolutions and then not do anything else, replaced the cable and it worked fine. More than likely it is some sort of proxy setting on your computer.


Also, you don't have ZoneAlarm or any **** like that runnin... black ice... if so, turn them all off.

Guys,

Thanks for all your help.
My old proxy software was unistalled, and my netcard is set to pick up everything from DHCP. I have cleared out all the proxy setting from IE, but no I cannot ping the router. I do not have Norton anything on my computer.
So I think my next step is to get a new cable. I hate buying 25 foot cables http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif oh well thanks for the help guys. If anyone has any more ideas I would be grateful.
