DUDE! 5.5K ???????

u got some more money to squander? send it to me :-)_ _

The system seems solid and all, but the price cannot be justified.

Btw, u are NOT going to see a tremendous diiiff in speed with the SCSI compared to a good quality IDE (exclusiing synthetic benchmarks).

MAN!, i still cant belive u spent 5.5k on a sys.

It is a good system, but not worth that much

enjoy

A SCSI raid is faster than IDE. Even a Ultra DMA 100 really has a substained burst rate of 33 mb. SCSI is a lot faster. Being that the hardrive is probably the slowest factor on a gameing rig SCSI raid would be the way to go. Expecially if you were to buy a money is no object system. Also SCSI drives are just plain built better. They don't have near the problems of an IDE hard drive.

Booya.

You got a sweet system. If you have the skills you could build the system yourself and paint a case like I did. Though the reason you buy a alienware is that unlike me they build gaming rigs for a living. They probably know more than I do (although I fairly full of myself). Second you buy alienware for the customer support and warrentee. If I overclock something and fry a $600 componet, Im screwed. If I tweak something I got to jump on SysOpt and beg for help. You on the other hand can call up Alienware and say "I paid 5.5K, make my rig work again". they they say "Yes sir, right away sir." The truth is a lot of us are jealous. That is going to be a sweet rig and you must have fat pockets. I guess we'll just have to come looking for you on the quake server.

I thought $5.5k was a bit pricey, so I priced every component at ibuyer.net. The prices are for the exact models listed, not generic, no substitutions.

case=$100
cpu=$189
fan=$50
mobo=$175
floppy=$10
384mb ram=$100
keyboard=$25
HD1=$320
HD2=$320
Adaptec SCSI Card=$200
SB live platinum: $136
DVD=$90
Plexwriter=$240
Cambridge desktop theater=$250
Wheel and pedals=$150
Precision2=$40
NIC=$35
UPS=$500
Geforce3=$354
Monitor=$770
Koolmax=$46
LS120=$170
Win2k professional=$250

Total: $4,520 (excluding shipping)

That includes Win2k pro, but no games, etc. So, they're making about $1,000 off of you, but it's not a bad deal. I can't say I'd pay $5.5k for something that's going to be pretty obsolete in a couple of years though http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif. You're buying the best of the best now, and when something is the best, it's always overpriced and will fall. But enjoy it cause it'll be a kick *** system.

Excellent system.... http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

However, the only box I would currently even think about dropping $5.5k on would be a dual Apple G-4, or possibly a Sun UltraSparc-III.

From someone who knows, getting a lot of money doesn't mean you can throw responsibility out the window. It will be gone before you know it --- poof ---. Everyone goes a little nuts at first, but if you don't get ahold of yourself soon enough and spend responsibly, you'll be wishing you did... Any amount of money now will be 10x later if it's invested wisely, and spent wisely, rather than blown.

I would rather see someone spend that kind of money on an Alienware PC than on three Compaqa tho, lol. It should be a very solid PC (besides fully as fast as the specs would lead you to think)

That is one smokin' system!

"However, the only box I would currently even think about dropping $5.5k on would be a dual Apple G-4" Rob and I must have been looking at the same box http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

$5,500 -I've got a little more than that invested in my current systems, but I have 4 of them + all the peripherals...

Not to mention all the $$$$ I have foolishly squandered on systems I do not own anymore.

I think I've got $1200 just in 17" monitors..

I really need some kind of "Upgrades Anonymous" -and please do not show me that Fry's add!!!!!

Well if it is going to be a gaming machine, Apple wouldn't cut it http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Nice job on the system. Although, I would definately invest a good portion of it as Scott said. I've always said that if I won some great amount of money through a game show or whatever, I'd invest it. You can make A LOT of money through slow growth, low risk investments over many years, say even $10k would make you REALLY rich over X years. Even less than that would be good. When you retire or are about to, you will have A LOT of money to spend.

Hi dude,

The 29160N is not a RAID controller...
Anyway, this is a really nice setup.

At home, I have almost the same setup:
- Asus CUV4X-D with 2 PIII 1GHz
- 512MB Crucial SDRAM PC133
- GeForce GTS 64MB DDR
- SBLive Platinum with Sony DTS amp/speakers
- Adaptec SCSI RAID 2100s (32MB on-board) with 2 IBM 36LZX 10000rpm, 4Mb in RAID0
- Adaptec SCSI 2940UW with Pioneer 10x/40x, Yamaha 16x/10x/40x and Plextor 40x
- LS-120 (I hate floppy drives)
- MS Forcefeedback steering wheel and joystick
- Iiyama 19" monitor
- Logitech i-Touch Cordless Desktop
- 3Com webcam
- HP 990 cxi printer
- Epson GT-7000 USB scanner
