I wouldn't worry about 811493, as it's been known to slow peoples computers down considerably... ZDnet has articles on that. Also, someone could only hurt you with the issue 811493 fixes if they can physically log on to your computer according to ZDnet. You can download the other update from MS and see if you can install it that way, that may help...:t

The database corruption won't install on mine and one of the buggers made my machine crash, 811493, which has been taken out of the "critical" list and put in the"recommended" list. sheessh, any other company would be outta business by now.:(
I never knew that Win XP needs so many updates. I thought Win 98 SE needs more updates than Win XP. Come to think of it! Microsoft likes its customers to update their Windows quite often. Some sort of a money-earning scam?

Try this, go to Safe Mode and rename the folder CATROOT2 (in the WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 folder) to CATOLD, make sure you renamed the CATROOT2 not CATROOT then reboot and try the updates and tell me if it works.

I am sorry but I don't quite understand you reasoning, if a company offers FREE updates how can it be a money making scam. If you are still running an OS that is 5 years old and can still get updates for it then they are not forcing you to upgrade. I upgrade my hardware alot more then Windows. The hardware manifactures get way more money from me then Microsoft. MAC OS is the OS that forces you to pay alot if you had verison 10 you had to get a whole new OS to get 10.2.
Just my opinion :)

Your hardware works when you buy it? yes? What would you do with it if it didn't?
Windows "upgrades" are bug fixes for inferior produce. Imagine selling doors with locks that opened with any key, and then being offered a "free" lock as bad as the first and many times after someone else had rummaged through your house?
Question, the last "worm" virus exploited what operating system and what known server vunerabillity?
Oh I see, of course, it was the network administrators fault for not taking advantage of the free "upgrade".LOL.:D
Patch, bugfix, critical upgrade do not equal free anything but repairs something that was broken when it was sold. I remember getting paid for testing beta software, now I pay to do it? no chance.;)

The reason why Windows seem so unstable is that everything is made for it, for example Linux does not get viruses because when you make a virus you want to affect as many people as possible since most people have Windows that is where you go. I know Windows is not really secure but lets be honest, Linux, Windows, and MAC OS all are unsecure it is just who the hacker, etc go after and Windows is most popular. remember if 40 people own Windows and 20 have problems and 20 people own Linux and 10 have problems then it is still 50% of the people. Your not going to hear about as many problems with stability and security with other OSs not that many people own them.
Atleast they make updates :)

This is true, my real gripe with MS is that any other company selling millions of copies of anything would have long since dropped the price. For example, I paid £30 for the original Unreal, great game, but had a new patch every two weeks for about two years!!! However, for the money, well worth putting up with the glitches. If I had paid £300, then I would have been a tad nafffed off I think.
Are there things that come free of charge? I don't know about that but the Windows updates are free and I like free stuffs. Hehehehehehe...
Anyway, who cares about Microsoft secretly checking on your PC while downloading the updates or any other things. We can just continue to use Windows and update it like nobody's business.
