So i am assuming that it comes as standalone software, unless for some strange reason they first installed win98 and then upgraded it, but why would IBM do that for their customers? That is my input, but as I joined SysOpt 10 minutes ago, I may not be the most reliable sosources. But I have no idea where you can obtain a legal copy for a good price. I preffered win95 anyways. Here's a thaught, though: Apparently, when left running nonstop, Win95 will crash every 42.5 days! Apparently it has something to do with the clock (or something). ---=={Virjo}==--- Virjo 05-30-2001, 05:18 PM Apologies for my shocking spelling... Brangwen 05-30-2001, 05:39 PM Win98se <u>does</u> come as a stand-alone operating system. I'm not certain if one can buy it retail (stand alone) or only acquire a OEM (original equipment manufacturer) full version, as with a new computer. The 98se <u>upgrade</u> is sold retail as I recall. Sorry, I've no idea where to purchase a copy. Brangwen http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif madfish 05-30-2001, 06:03 PM here in Burlington,Vt. you can still get a copy of win. `95,98`or `98se upgrades at staples. cheers MiKe85 05-30-2001, 06:30 PM In Michigan, you can buy the add-on, or the entire win98se OS. If all else fails, order straight from Microsoft. Richard_Cranium72 05-30-2001, 07:10 PM For about $58.00 you can get it a www.directdeals.com (http://www.directdeals.com) or www.9software.com (http://www.9software.com) Check out the other software too. Lots of good stuff; Corel Photo/Draw 8 for $15.00 , no manual Corel Office 2000 $9.00 , no manual Microsoft MOney 2000 $5-10, I forget Don't do the upgrade, when mine was running it I had all sorts of bugs, now with the regular old 98 or 98se it runs great.. Another not, I don't like ME, some do, most don't. Virjo Welcome, and this ain't www.spelling.com (http://www.spelling.com) http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif aznlurkerz 05-30-2001, 10:53 PM for some strange reason.. i cant access the page www.directdeals.com (http://www.directdeals.com) *shrugs* i still prefer win98se over ME...but still gotta find a copy of win98se! ~aznlurkerz By-tor & the Snow Dog 05-31-2001, 03:44 AM I may be mistaken, but as I recall you can use the upgrade CD for a clean install. Only thing is it'll ask you for a qualifying MS product during installation. You take out the SE disk, put in your 98 or 95 CD, it reads it and sees that you actually did own one of them. Then it asks for the SE disk again and you're in like Flint. (trust me everyone, flint was a cool guy!) MUCH better than installing 95 or 98 THEN upgrading. Way I see it, the only difference in a full-boat disk and an upgrade disk is that the upgrade wants you to show it you already have a MS OS, the full-boat disk does not. Have a great one. By-Tor derek79602 05-31-2001, 04:45 AM You must've had a different version of the SE upgrade, because I tried the same thing, and it yelled at me. It said that " THIS IS AN UPGRADE VERSION ONLY" then cackled in the distance. stewartmann 05-31-2001, 04:56 AM with ref' to the upgrade disk also doing a clean install, but ask for another diskfor qualifying ... if it is anything like the office 97' the disk i have is spose to be an upgrade, however if i use the reg number for a full version, it does NOT ask for qualifying soft', and goes and installs it fine. look on astalavista for serial num's MTAtech 05-31-2001, 08:56 AM My understanding is that the full CD disk and the upgrade disk are the same, but act differently depending upon the MS key code. At work, we belong to the MS Select Program and the disk doesn't need a Key Code at all. aznlurkerz 05-31-2001, 11:21 PM so.. what would be the difference when installing win 98 then up-grading to win98se, and/or just installing win98se stand alone? ~aznlurkerz SysOpt.com
