Please can anyone help me out with regards to the problem below.
I have recently had to reformat my hard drive and Windows 98 is operating fine but with 16 colours only.
I have a PC266 SystemBoard from PCChips. It is an M810 Socket A V5.0.
When I try to install all drivers from the Auto Set Up it stops at the VGA install page and says 'Please direct the correct CD-ROM driver by yourself for Windows OS'.
I've tried pointing to the AGP, VGA folders on the CD but to no avail.
When windows starts up it recognises a 'standard PCI graphics card' and says Windows 98 already has the best drivers. I've tried to load from the drivers on the PCChips CD.
I've tried changing the new hardware to Sis 630/730 and sucessfully load drivers from the CD but this causes a problem with the display settings. A message appears saying the adapter type is incorrect, or the current settings don't work with your hardware.
I've since found out that the motherboard has a S3 Trio 3D graphics chip. Do I need the drivers for that instead?
This process has been carried out through device manager in all matter of combinations using the VGA drivers on the Systemboard CD.
It was all working fine before, I re-formatted my hard drive.
If any one can help it would be much appreciated as I've spent days and nights trying to rectify the situation by myself.

The very first thing to do after installing Windows is to run the PCChips CD setup until you're sick of it. It will prompt you to reboot after each run. Do not let Windows search for drivers. Do not "browse" for drivers.

Yes, you need the Trio drivers, but you need to find the folder that they're in and run the Setup there. You could also disable onboard video and add a card. The Trio sorta stinks anyway.

Thanks for the swift reply. My system won't let me run the auto set up all the way through. It stops at the VGA part as mentioned in the original post. I've downloaded the drivers for the S3 Trio 3D from the internet but haven't had chance to use them yet. Surely all the relevant info should be on the original CD that came with the system board.
How do I disable onboard video? What type of card should I be adding? Is the VGA graphics card the S3 Trio 3D. If so there is no option in the hardware list in Windows 98. It gives me S3 or other versions.
I'm stuck with what I have hardware wise at the moment so just need to get up and running so I can do some work. Any further help would be appreciated. My monitor is a Sampo Tech KM-712.

Kind Regards

Jon

Go here and choose your board:

All the downloads are there.

You can usually disable the onboard VGA in BIOS. Some motherboards disable it automatically when you install an AGP card. For your board, I would recommend an ATi Radeon 7500 AGP card:

That garbled message means "insert Windows CD".

The graphics ARE SiS 730, not S3 Trio at all. The secret is you need to install the SiS AGP driver too, because the chipset internal graphics unit is AGP-stylee.

Hi Peter

Thanks for you message.
My monitor connection is attached to a card with S3 Trio 3D NDE 3BB on it. This card is connected to the M810 system board. I purchased this as one unit so assumed it's part of the same product. I'm very new to this business but trying to learn as fast as I can.

So if I insert the Windows 98 at the prompt. What should I do next?

On the M810 drivers disk there are two folders in the VGA folder.
AGP and SIS. Do I choose the Win9x or Win98? Is the driver device s730s. Do I need to install the hardware via 'add new hardware' or 'device manager'. If so what type of card do I say it is?

I tried putting the Windows 98 CD in at the prompt in the early stages of this problem. The screen cleared but nothing actually happened when I looked in my dislay properties.

Should I re-format my hard drive and start again with the auto-setup.

Any further advice would be much appreciated.

Kind Regards
