well first of all if you have a CDROM you can rip songs from there. If you dont already have a ripping tool go to www.download.com (http://www.download.com)
and get one there. As for your optical line out it is probably best used with a stereo that lacks a cdplayer.

I've plugged my cd player into my computer with a "normal" in/out cable but my cdplayer has a "normal" line out since your is optical you might also need an optical in on your computer. who knows though maybe a normal cable will fit into an optical output.

I don't think it is possible.
A cd player and a cd-rom are two different things (I think anyway). If what you are trying to do is possible, that means you theoretically should be able to put, say, Half Life in the portable cd player and play it off there instead of your cd-rom. Just my 0.02 cents.
Spidey is right in saying that you can use a cable to plug into your stereo if you don't have a cd player.

I somehow have always had them in my house. But if you go to best buy, curcuit city or some other electronics store you should be able to find them. You should also ask one of the sales reps they should be able to help you. thats the only thing i can think of. i wish i could think of what the cables are called like i said i've always had them around and thought of them as normal cables.
I will try to find out some more info on them

this i know for sure that you can do this. I've done it. u can also do it with many other devices with ouputs such as a tape player i have edited tapes this way.
hang in there jacob!

I found out what the cables are called there just called stereo cables. The only problem i see here is that i think the input on your computer is a normal stereo input and the output on your cdplayer is optical so im not sure if there compatible. you either need a cable that is stereo on one side and optical on another. (sound farfetched but it probably exists) unless an optical cable will fit into the back of your computer. If worse comes to worse you can always go to one of the electronics store and ask them.

be sure to tell us how it goes
P.S. After some searching i'm pretty sure (but not certain) that optical out needs an optical in.

All you have to do is plug in your CD player into the Auxiliary port in your amplifier , then run a stereo output from the receiver to the "line in" port on your sound card, and you should be able to play your CD's and record them on your computer. Just like copying casettes from your phonograph...

Are you sure your discman has an optical output? Usually only older/expensive cd players have sometimes an optical output. Anyway, if you want to use the optical output, you need a soundcard with optical input and a fiberglass cable. Those soundcards are quite expensive.
If you can't use optical, you'll need a cable with a headphone jack on both sides.

There are sound cards that support optical input/output. Such as the Hurcules Game Theather XP.

It sounds like it should work if your sound card has audio in. I know other devices work this way. good luck

I have sound blaster live value. costs around $49. I can run my rca cable from my video camera into an adapter that plugs into the standard microphone input. I don't think you would have to use an adapter. Give it a try.

Everyone seems to miss the point here.
True RIPPING implies collecting the 1's & 0's that make the music, i.e. DIGITAL extraction. Ripping leads to a WAV file that is a perfect digital copy of the music file on CD.
Yes you can hook up a music CD player to your sound card but the signal is ANALOGUE & will be coloured by various imperfections in the process(interference, quality of sound card etc).
CD ROMs capable of perfect digital extracion are CHEAP. <$100 AUS which is < $50US.
Get a CD rom recomended on this list http://www.cdspeed2000.com/ (it does not have to be that fast, just accurate)GL

the optical line out is digital though not analog
wyvrn

But recording it from the line in on your sound card would be analogue, correct? To make a perfect copy you would be better off buying a ripper and installing it on your computer. Unless you find a soundcard that has optical IN.

I think the sound blaster live platinum 5.1 has a optical line in on the live drive that comes with it. Thats gonna cost you a little over 150 but at the beginning of the forum (a long time ago) you said that your cd-rom stopped ripping. so it would be cheaper to either buy a new one of post another topic about how to fix it. cdroms are cheap though.

i posted about a topic about it and about two other comments on it in other topics but no one seemed to have any ideas.
it used to be able to rip but now it cant, and windows says it cannot be read digitally when it used to. any ideas?
it would be funny to put a good sound card on this computer...
