hey people..
my friend wants me to upgrade his system, currently an AMD K6 300-400? mhz (not sure) with 128meg ram and stuff.
He uses the system for a LOT of programming , a pretty good amount of gaming and daily web surfing on the system.... and don't forget ALL divx movies he can get hold of http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif
He has a low budget for the upgrade (300 MAX... 350 incase the video card is 100-150)
I have already bought an IWill KK266 (without raid) for the purpose. Although it's more than what's needed at this budget.... i got it because reviews say it's stable and since it's ddr fsb type... future upgrade ready.
The thing where i am stuck is.... what processor can i get him for MAXIMUM performance at below $80 (including shipping)
The absolute maximum is $100 including shipping.
Does it make A LOT of difference if i get him a 750Mhz instead of a 900mhz duron?
What speed duron is THE BEST with regards to "price-performance"?
I need an answer asap
thanks a lot
I have decided to

vintron....
You can pick up the 750 Duron for about $60 shipped with a 1yr warranty(less with only a 15 day) and the 900 for $96 shipped with a 1yr warranty(less with only a 15 day)...
Hope this Helps

Where can you get better prices than Pricewatch?
Of course you should get the 900 tbird as it is only a few $$ more than a Duron and 10% faster at least.

...Far be it from me to recommend overclocking, but they should all do 900mhz with a little coaxing..

Don't u people get it?
My question is not about the price.
It's about which of those processors have THE BEST value in terms of "price-performance". In layman terms... does it make a HUGE difference in performance if i get a 750mhz or a 900mhz (considering hte uses i mentioned)
And this time...... please reply only if u understood the question clearly and know what u r talking about.
Thanks to everybody that tried....and people out there that have an answer 4 me

if he's moving from an k6 to a duron buy the cheapest one you can find and he will be happy. the performance difference will blow him away.
in a couple month's when the newness wears off and he wants to go faster either over clock it or buy a faster chip.

ahhh! duh! I get it! Sort of like what anyone who goes grocery shopping does almost everytime they go the market - do I buy 7oz for $.49 or do I buy 9oz for $.79 ?...do I buy the 6-pack of Miller for $3.99 or do I buy the 12-pack for $4.85?
I'm sorry, I assumed that it would be a simple math matter for you, so I offered this little hint/advice: You can buy the Duron 750 and easily overclock it to 900 and still have the system perfectly stable and running cool -and that would be the best value for the dollar. - ah but never mind, I withdraw the suggestion.
BTW - can anyone tell me if there is much difference between a blue sky with a few clouds and a blue sky with a lot of clouds?

That's being a bit rude. Everyone is helping out. Sounds to me that you don't get it.

Hey Vintron:
If you're interested in the price/performance ratio, just do the math (based on todays prices at pricewatch.com)
Duron 700:
$38/700mhz = $.054 per mhz
750:
$36/750mhz = $.048 per mhz
800:
$48/800mhz = $.06 per mhz
850:
$56/850mhz = $.065 per mhz
900:
$70/900mhz = $.078 per mhz
So, purely from a mathematical standpoint, the 750 Duron has the best performance per dollar spent on the processor - is that what you wanted to know??
On the other hand, the processor is only a small part of the overall price of the system. If you look at the combined price of the motherboard/processor/fan/RAM/video, the difference in cost between the 750 and the 900 is about 10%, but the performance increase is about 20%, making the 900 a better value for the system as a whole.
Then again, if you were really interested in value you could have bought an ECS K7VZA with an Athlon 1.2 ghz processor and fan for about $220, add a GeForce 2mx video card for under $100 - then you would be into some really serious price to performance ratio without breaking your $350 budget.
Nothing is ever as simple as it looks.

I want to thank "nunyadam" and "ragtop" for understanding my question clearly and providing me with valuable advices. It's great to know that atleast some of the people here have mature behaviour. Thanks a lot guys.
btw... i have ordered the Duron 750oem+ a pretty good fan for 60bucks 3day fedex shipping included.
Now i have $120 to $ 170 for a very good video card.
Thnaks again for helping me out

Duron 750 $36.00 Pricewatch
Duron 900 $70.00 Pricewatch
The 900 is twice the price.Obviously the 750 gives you more bang for the buck as the 900 will not perform twice as good. But who in their right mind wouldn't spend a measly 34 bucks extra for a 900? Wait a couple days and both will probably be cheaper.

That's a little disrespectful isn't it. They were just trying to help and sometimes if you read through a post quick you miss little things. A "Friendly" post to clarify the question would have been much more appropriate. This forum has quite a friendly atmosphere and it's in everyones best interest it stays that way. Comments like those can discourage people from posting.

Vintron. Try not to be too critical. Even If someones response doesn't directly address your question, It may be helpful none the less. Condesention is self absorbing.
