I am looking for a new dvd-rom drive. I was looking at the Pioneer 16x slot-loader, but I can afford a more expensive drive, and was wondering if it would be worth the extra cash. Any sugestions? It has to be at least 16x, have cd-r read support, and preferably be slot loading, and it has to be under $100 shipped on pricewatch.

I've heard only good things about the Pioneer 16x DVD drive.
Just have to do some research, because when an item is more expensive, that doesn't mean the item will be better. (Just common sense-i'm sure you know this already.)
Tell us which DVD drive you do decide to buy!!

I just bought a Pioneer 16x DVD-rom drive (slot load), and it should be here in a few days. Thanks for the tips.
Save some money and get an older (but not used) Toshiba 6x. The device is region free as far as the firmware. The region is controlled by the software you use! Newer DVD ROMs have the region burned in the firmware!

ditto to Warthog's post. Great drive and worth the extra money saved. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

106s is top of the top
the 16x slot loading come in two flavors - 105s and 106s
The 105s is ATA/33 and the 106s is ATA/66.
but the full 16x DVD running or the full 40x CD running doesnt even touch 33MB/s, so I dont think it really matters in any case.
