My theory on "needing to upgrade" is... Only upgrade components when games you play or like to play can't be played on your current PC configuration at all or at a Descent framerate (30fps+ is all you need) Not just upgrade wen ever something new comes out or your components have been forgotten about at the store you bout your component at a week ago, lol...

But I think your system is fine, it still plays games I bet, maybe get a video card that is DirectX 8/8.1 and 128mb, somethin like a Radeon 8500LE, or 9100/9200 would suffice, other than that I believe your system is good enough, maybe add some more ram, (it's SDram right?) cuz iSDram is cheap, and more ram is always good, :t

Your system is decent. There a thing or two that I would personally focus on. Your processor is fine, but will probley need an upgrade soon (Like in the next year, not right away. Just for next generation games soon to hit the shelves.)

The main thing I would focus on (And this is all personal preference, its not really a nessecity) Would be getting rid of the Hercules. I used to have one, and though it runs well, i don't find its compatability and textures are that great. I have run into a few games that I had issues with because of the hercules 3d prophet I had. Even with the games it did run, I found textures looked much better when I installed my ATI Radeon card. Textures looked completely different, and ran smoother.

But again, I'm not trying to knock on hercules head here. Your system isn't too bad. One of my friends is running a P3 600Mhz with 384 SD pc133 ram and a ATI radeon 9000 128meg DDR vid card, and he is able to run almost as much as I can, it suprised me but I've seen it. Sometimes it takes lower graphics settings though. But he is still running games like Mafia, Battlefield 1942, Hitman 2, and more. The only thing I've seen him have a problem with so far is Unreal 2 and GTA3.

Well, check others opinions too.

2x Nasty pink flat-panel speakers (a present..)
1x "Gaming" Headphones with mic.
1x USB Logitech Webcam
1x PS/2 Keyboard
1x Optical Mouse, USB, but running through PS/2 adapter

This system does me fine for gaming, Although I want to upgrade the graphics card. The graphics card just about manages Unreal II in 1024x768, provided I disable Anisotropic Filtering and FSAA, and overclock it to the max. therefore, any better games (Doom 3 anyone?) is never gonna run on this card. Im thinking R9500 or better :)

:(

Just look for a review on a video card and usually will tell you what direct X generation it is, or goto the manufactures website, or simply just look on the video cards box (if it isn't OEM) or ask your retailer. :p From my understanding the GeForce 3 and up are DirectX 8, and the ATI Radeon 8500 and up are Direct X 8.1 :t

My system is Athlon 850 w/ 512 133. I can't upgrad mobo or memory type at the moment, cuz $$$

I'm using a Gainward 32 meg video card I bought over a year ago. I'm looking at buying a new video card either 64 or 128, I think that will help improve my gaming. Until I can buy a new mobo and memory, I've seen the prices drop on combos at Fry's.

If any one has any suggestions on a decent video card, let me know.

At 2700+ speeds ( 2.16 GHz ) it runs great. Going to back it down to 2100+ speeds soon though. I have to deploy over seas for a few months and she's taking the computer down south with her so she can keep in touch with me. Don't want it to crash on her when I'm not there to fix it. I am a bit confused in video card categories. I have two cards and I can only use Hercules 3D Prophet II Ultra 64MB on my PC. The other card is Xelo GeForce 4 MX 440 128MB DDR but I can't use it. My PC hangs wherever I play Warcraft 3 and other intensive games.

My cousin told me that the motherboard and processor may not tolerate the intensive processing speed.

I highly doubt it has anything to do with your mobo and processor not handling the intense processing speeds, thats just inaccurate info there, the MX line of cards are not all that powerfull... Its either gonna be a defective card, or some sort of driver issue. Maybe chipset drivers, or video card drivers.

Make sure your system isn't over heating as well. I find the Gforece MX cards give out a little too much heat. I had the same problem with my Gforce 64mb MX card. I realized it was over heating, and instead of buying more fans to keep it cool, i just traded it in for an ATI Radeon 7500 64mb.

Check your system temp, it might be the issue. Maybe no very likely, but is possible. As I said, I've seen it. Only when I play newer and graphics hard games it happened.

On the heat issue, I can agree with you. Becos wherever I play intensive games, the games will either hang on me or the PC restarts itself. And a blue Windows warning screen will appear on my monitor.

Yeah, same thing that used to happen to me.
Try installing more fans into your system, or if you are really cheap like myself. Take the side off your computer, and point a house fan towards the inside! LOL

It worked for me for weeks until I bought my radeon. And I still run the computer with the side off..(No fan though)

disk 11 those pc150 and pc166 ram sticks do you have them running at 150 and 166? Or does the mobo prevent you from doing so.....like mine does with 133.

I think its my processor that is holding me back. Out of the box me and a friend tried to oc it to 133 and it wouldnt post, even with 1.825 volts. So I ran it at stock to install/burn in. Then I was able to run it @ 1.46 (11*133), but had to be over 1.7 volts to get into windows. Now, it wont post again @ 133 fsb, so im now running @ 110 fsb with 2-2-2-5-7 memory timings and is solid. I did Sandra and it misreports the memory as pc 100 and pc 133 sticks. And in the post, it whines about running cas 2 but no problems yet. I was so mad, cuz I was hoping for like 150 fsb +.

What about the performance between GeForce and Radeon?

Rugor
04-24-2003, 12:14 AM
That depends on which Radeon and which GeForce.

A Radeon 9800 Pro is the fastest card you can buy. Period. A Radeon 9700 Pro is comparable to a GfFX5800 Ultra.

The 9700 is faster than a Ti4600.

The 9500 Pro is slower than a Ti4600 without AA/AF, faster with.

I hope that helps.

cbh
04-24-2003, 01:44 AM
So GF FX is much newer than GF 4 Ti?

Kanata X
04-24-2003, 05:24 AM
for awhile, radeon 9700 pro was the fastest on the market, then newer cards came out for both GF and radeon. Those are the two leading and are going head to head in competition with each other.

The way I see it, at this point, Gforce and Radeon's top cards are going to beat each other out just a little bit every month or so, each taking its own spot in the lead for short periods of time. There may be one in the lead, but there difference between the two cards are very small, they are just going for braggin rights as the top spot holder. It's REALLY about who are you more "Loyal" to I guess, ATI or Nivida, Gforce or Radeon, because the difference between their highest performence cards are small.

(Again I state this is my opinion only. Look for others imput aswell)

The problem is I need to upgrade my PC so that I can play Doom 3or other intensive games. I don't want to gace another hanging of PC when my games crash due to heat or other stupid problems. I am very disappointed with my current PC but the computer spare parts in Singapore are damned expensive. For GF Ti video cards! They can cost up to $300 - $400 plus Sing dollars. Sometimes the price can jack up to $600 plus. I really admire some of you when you said you can spend $600 or $800 to complete a fully capable PC.

Yeah, I have already ordered my ATI Radeon 9800 128MB. It should be in within the next day or so. I just hope it doesn't run to hot. I don't think I have much roon for another chassis fan. But the fan on the card should be good enough since I run my machine without the side on it.

To start, I must say this:

As long as your computer gets what you want it to do done, then you are perfectly fine. If it can do what you want it to do (satisfactorily) then you do not need to upgrade.

As for my specs:

AMD Athlon XP 2000+ running as a 2100+ @ 1.76GHz
MSI KM2M Combo L (MS-6738)
-6 USB 2.0 Ports
-6.1 onboard sound
-S3 ProSavage 8 32 MB onboard video
-10/100 Mbps LAN
Kingston PC2100 768 MB RAM
Maxtor 40 GB HDD
Fujitsu 10 GB HDD
48x CD-ROM (temporary replacement for broken 16x DVD...)
8x/4x/32x CD-RW
Floppy Drive
Actiontec 1394 Firewire Card
LinkWorld Black Mid Tower ATX Case
LinkWorld 400 PSU
Windows XP Professional
Full Software Suite
15" NEC Monitor

This system is quite new and is not fully complete yet but is in working order.:)

Some upgrades to come...

Lite-On 16x Black DVD Drive
ATI Radeon 9100 128MB
17" Samsung, ViewSonic, or NEC monitor

Here is a pic:

Sorry about the bad angle...

Takes me about 10 minutes to defrag my 80gig with diskeeper lite. You should run defrag often-after any major (like 1 gig) file deletions, instalations. If it takes you that long on a small hdd then either the hdd is stone age tech or the drive is heavily fragmented and you only run defrag like once a month or so.;)

I have an 80 and a 30GB. I have 60GB for just data files. Mp3, backup, video, my TV tuner recordings, etc. I have the rest partitioned into 10's for Windows/Linux/CDImages/archives, etc.

I'm going to change it when i get my 120, to having the 120 for data, and the 30 in a 20/10 for windows XP/linux respectively. My 80 I don't expect to last too long, it's an IBM DeskStar (aka DeathStar) and I haven't heard good things about their reliability:( Anyone else know anything about these?)

If its a GXP120 then it isnt a deathstar, they run quit well, as does my 80gb GXP120. However the older GXP60/70's are notorious for packing up at the drop of a hat

This isn't my primary system, but I wanted to show what a 686 could do.. :-)

This is a totally free system that consists of handme downs from my other computers and/or parts from other ppl that were gonna trash it..

Samsung CD rom *same as above*
PNY Nvidia Gforce 4, 440mx 64meg AGP..
Realtec Ethernet Adapter..

Just to let you all know what these old *** archaic free/virtually free systems can do, I read the post that some one couldn't play gta3 on his 600..

GTA3
Vice City
Sim City 4
C&C Generals

All absoutly flawless.. Generals is a little slow to load, especially after playing it on an 2.4 o/c'd Athlon... But it's all good.. ohh and why do I use this machine? It didn't cost me nothing like I said, and it sits next to my Dreamcast in the living room.. :-) nothing like C&C on the big screen.. :x Why do I still have a dreamcast? why would I want a bs2? hehe... BTW, i'm running WinXp on all my systems.. None have crashed to date, only problem on that system above, I had to take out the SB Live and put in a 16.. I can't get the sound card to run with that vid card in XP.. I never turn them off, and the only time they do go off is to restart for software or power outtages.. *any one with a cheap ups for sale? :-)*

Could a P4 1.5@1.8 with 256DDR utilise an ATi Radeon 9800Pro properly? so it can run games like the future Doom 3 at a decent framerate?

oh and the mobo is asus P4B266 with 4or8x AGP i think..
would the card actually be compatible with the board?

it only has a leadtek GF3 Ti200:(

Trashed my computer late last nite, threw out some stuff I didn't need that I could sell for more than I needed it for - and since would have cash I took a chance on the mod since I already bought the coolers and I didn't screw up (surpisingly, as my soldering skills suck)

Althon 2500 XP at 2380mhz at 45 C idle at 1.85 volts
Lapped Volcano 9 (made it a decent cooler actually)
8RDA+ (modded) Vantec Icebrugs on the nb and sb, vdd to 1.86
Two Seagate 15k 73 gig drives, raid 1
1 120 GB WD Caviar Special Edition (JB)
1 gig 512x2 Corsair XMS 3200LL @ 414 mhz 2-2-2-6 timings
Plextor 48x24x48 CD Burner
Pioneer 4x 2x DVD Burner
Audigy 2 Platinum Ex (may ditch for onboard since Soundstorm is almost as good and would make me some money selling the current card)
A modem
Nice amp and speakers
21" Sony Trinitron Monitor
Radeon 9700 Pro (380/335
Completely Trashed Chieftech Dragon Case
440? Watt Enermax PSU

Looking at the chip, I realized it's a 450.. Forgot, a 300 o/c'd to 400 was what I had in this mobo.. well it bit the dust... The 450 lists as an Intel Celeron Processor 451mhz.. I don't think it's a coppermine.. Hell dunno how to tell even... I wish these **** things were like the slot A's and totally enclosed with the model number written on the outside.. :-) it reads Intel Celeron on the back.. Can't read the actual chip right now, as I'm downloading movies to watch.. I'll probly check it out this weekend or so when I reboot to play the new stuff I'm getting.. :-)

The slot idea has long since past. The area it (saves) is really just as much as the area it takes up. Throw in a modern heatsink and it would take up much more of the board than any manufacturer would want it to. I also hated those boards.

My primary PC is this: :(
ASUS Aladin P5A-B (XT Mainboard)
AMD K6-2 350 (100FSBx3.5)
256 MB PC100 SDRAM
nVidia GF4 MX 440 (Upgrade from Rage 3D Pro Turbo)
Creative Labs Soundblaster AudioPCI with Ensoniq Chip (128 bit 8 MB Waveset) (Free upgrade from SoundBlaster Vibra 16X)
10GB HDD
Win98 FE
DX9

My work PC's are this: (Though I have not been able to use these lately)
Dell Precision 220
Dual P3-667
256 MB RAM
nVidia Riva TNT2 Model 64
SoundMax Integrated Audio
9 GB SCSI
Win2k on one WinXP on the other
DX9

I am currently working on replacing the K6-2. It doesn't play Warcraft 3 so it is time. It works perfect for my wife and kids so I have decided to keep it working. I will buy a GF4 Ti series card or an ATI Radeon card when its time. Looking to go to at least Intel 2.4 GHz or AMD 3000+ - the price diff is only $50 but I want SSE2 for Photoshop and CAD software.

I built my machine on a budget..so it is not the greatest stuff but it will run what I want to play fine.

Intel P4 2.4BGHz
ASUS P4S8X mobo
256 mb pc2700 ram(soon to add 512mb)
Maxtor 80gig 7200 rpm HD
GeForce 4 MX440 64mb(possibly upgrade to Ti4600 or better)
Microsoft Optical mouse
The keyboard from my first computer(Packard Bell-personal value)
350watt PSU

I spent about $500 including the case, so it isn't the fastest but works for me.
