Hey, I'm using a computer @ my place of business: HEB Central Market...and we have a computer in the employee lounge that can access the internet. I've been asked to fix it so that this sex site won't keep coming up (I don't know how that got on there!!). ANyway, the puter accesses the net from a LAN server located somewhere in the main office. The manager installed some sort of software that blocks access to certain parts of the computer. I have no way of infiltrating it plus I'm running Windows 95!! I don't have access to the start menu or the menu bar in IE5, Right now, my boss left, so I don't know how to get in the **** puter...can anyone help me to get in the computer?? I need to access the INternet properties and the control panel...if anyone can help PLEASE DO!!!!!

thanks

well there are a few back door ways to get into stuff if you can get to any folder options or file options you could navigate to the C:\ and start up programs that
what can you get to ? my computer ? the A drive ? a little more info about what and where ?
you could also try rebooting into safe mode it might not load all the security program ?

sorry for not being more explicit...On the Start Menu...it only displays Shut Down/Help/Documents/Programs
Thats all. I also have access to all of C: drive from within My Computer. When I open up Internet Explorer 5, I click on Tools, I'm restricted from going to "options". Also, Control Panel isn't displayed in My Computer or the Start Menu. I basically need to reconfigure IE5, and the sound on the computer.

So if u could help me with that...thanks

Go to the website www.regedit.com. (http://www.regedit.com.) There you can find out how to unlock the regedit and then turn all that stuff back on. It works because I needed some stuff from computers that they had locked out at school. As long as you don't mind messing with the registry you can unlock everything. From the homepage, go to Security and then System, from there towards the bottom of the page will be "Disable Registry Editting Tools" in there is a patch to unlock it if you accidently turn it off. Very useful. Then under security is all the stuff you were talking about. Hope this helps.

I wasn't able to run control.exe because of the restrictions, and the website that you recommended also didn't help
I'm not sure I even know what software they used to lock the computer, Im using it right now, but I can only run the internet, that's all

also, regedit has been blocked access to!

any more suggestions, this is frustrating!

Get the download off of this page:
http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/190/

The download should unlock the registry editting tools. From there it should be easy to follow some of the instructions off of this website to fix it.

Start here: http://www.winguides.com/registry/category.php/401/

Then try these specifically if you don't find the exact one. I'm not sure if the sex site is the home page or what so I'm not sure extactly what your looking for but these should help once you unlock the registry. Hopefully the above download should do the trick but if not then I'm not sure.

Copy and paste this into a text file:
--------------------
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoControlPanel"="0"
--------------------

Don't copy the dashes.
Save the file as cpnl.reg (enclose the filename in quotes if you use notepad) on C:\.
Next, boot to DOS (if you can - use a start-up disk or even just a DOS boot disk if you like). Move to C:\ and type the following:

regedit /L:C:\Windows cpnl.reg

Reboot normally. Then, go to Start/Run and type "control" without the quotes then [Enter].
That should bring up the control panel for you. When you're done, change the "0" in the cpnl.reg file to "1" and reboot to DOS again, and enter the exact same regedit command. (To put the registry back the way it was.)

If that doesn't work I may have a few more ideas, if you want to email me at sittin-around@home.com

If you can get to the "SHUTDOWN", you should be able to "RESTART IN DOS". If you have saved a REGEDIT file (as someone else suggested) to floppy, you can copy it to C:\.
This will (or should) allow you to access the OPTIONS file.

Eveything mentioned so far can be locked down by Win95 as is. I swear you sound like an employee at my company because I have two locked down "public" computers in our cafeteria.

1. I will only mention three key things. Windows may restrict you to only running certain programs but it does so by filename. 2. IE lock down settings are not entirely within the registry. They are other files which can be downloaded at every IE start from a networked location.
3. Even with all (that I know of course) Win9x lock down techniques which include hiding local/network drives, disabling context sensitive menus, and running only allowed programs, etc., etc, etc, ...you can still access the local drives and any network drives you would otherwise have rights to.

You might want to search in the Windows or windows/system directory for poledit, it sounds thats that is what he is using or if you have a 95 disk you can find it and put it on a floppy. 95 cdrom ?:\admin\apptools\poledit and in 98 disk its ?:\tools\reskit\netadmin\poledit
You should be able to undo the policies, fix computer then redo policies, if thats whats he's using

I work for a company that produces a product to lock down systems in just this way (allowing only access to VERY specific and limited programs). The software we produce won't even let you browse the HD. The ONLY options in shut down are restart and shutdown. and there is NO way to get around it short of a network authenticated pw or a previously cashed pw(trust me we have tried on systems that have had a NIC go bad).

if the lock down method this person is up against is like this he is outta luck. most likely the reg is rewritten if there are any changes upon boot. In fact my guess is that MOST of the keys that windows requires to run admin tools are not even present in their normal locations.

Good luck.

Just a question:

If you have been asked by your employer to fix it, why dont they 'unlock' it for you ?.

Im sure i missed something http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif,

I'm going back to work today or tomorrow, so I;ll be able to try out the rest of the suggestions listed.

club-med:: I work at a business with 3 Assistant mgrs, 2 Store Managers, 1 head manager, and 1 store director. The store director is the person Im working with on these computers. He only works a few days out of the week, and @ different times of the day than I usually work. He's not easily accessible, and he's the only other person with the passwords to unlock the computer. So the next time he's there, (if I haven't fixed the puter then) I'll just get him to unlock it.

I'll let u all know the results by tonight, thanks so far...

Just a thought, but if access to dos is cut off by other routes, if one were to interrupt the boot process, (in Win 9X, anyway) you would get re-booted to the options menu where you have the options to boot in safe mode, etc. Quite often, booting in dos is an option at this juncture.
