Is there any problem with hot switching with these older mechanical turn dial type switches? Do you have to turn things off befor you can switch from one to another? They look just like those manual printer switches.
I'm considering buying one. TIA

If your going to use everything connected to the switch then turn them on when you startup your system so everything is ready to be used.

They'll work just fine. I use a Linksys 2-port KVM...

you'll need to turn the switch while the PC's are off as the mechanical KVM's have no emulator.
If you are going to just switch between 2 PC's, Linksys and IOGEAR both make a nice small unit that are inexpensive ($39). I'm using the iogear (http://www.newegg.com/app/Viewproduct.asp?DEPA=0&submit=manufactory&catalog=143&manufactory=1479&description=&srchFor=GCS62%20KVM) right now and it has worked flawlessly to date. All you need do to switch between the 2 PC's while they are on is tap the scroll lock key twice. Couldn't be easier IMHO.
