HOAX HOAX HOAX sorry, check here as golfcart states: http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/sulfnbk.exe.warning.html

WELL WAIT---is the email a hoax and COULD that file be infected???

Is it a hoax or? My g/f did a hoaxsearch on it and found nothin, any thoughts (this file IS on my machine):

WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT OPEN THE FILE while following the instructions
below!!!

URGENT. A VIRUS could be in your computer files now, dormant but
will become active on June 1. FOLLOW DIRECTIONS BELOW TO CHECK IF YOU HAVE
IT AND TO REMOVE IT NOW.

It was brought to our attention yesterday that a virus is in circulation =
via email. I looked for it and to our surprise we found it on ours. Since
we've corresponded via email, we may have passed it along to you OR you may
have passed it to us. So, please follow the directions and remove it from
yours TODAY!!!!!!!

No Virus software can detect it. It will become active on June 1, 2001.
It might be too late by then. It wipes out all files and folders on
the hard drive. This virus travels thru E-mail and migrates to the
'C:\windows\command' folder. To find it and rid it from your computer, do
the following:

Go to the "START" button.
Go to "FIND" or "SEARCH"
Go to "FILES & FOLDERS"
Make sure the find box is searching the "C:" drive.
Type in; SULFNBK.EXE
Begin search.

If it finds it, highlight it.
Go to 'File' and delete it---->******DO NOT DO THIS******
Close the find Dialog box
Open the Recycle Bin
Find the file and delete it from the Recycle bin
You should be safe.

The bad part is: You need to contact everyone you have sent ANY
E-mail to in the past few months. Many major companies have found this
virus on their computers. Please help your friends !!!!!!!!

DO NOT RELY ON YOUR ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE. McAFEE and NORTON CANNOT DETECT IT
BECAUSE IT DOES NOT BECOME A VIRUS UNTIL JUNE 1ST.

Yes the email is a hoax, and yes that file(or others) can be infected by this virus. (http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.magistr.24876@mm.html)
InoculateIT PE with the most recent updates will pick it up and fix it, if it exists. Just repaired a machine with the virus last night http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Edit -> I should add that the file named in the email was not one of the files infected on the machine I repaired.

Scuse me for getting excited about it all, my g/f and I have an online support group of about 600 people we email often, we of course take precautions so this caught me off guard... :-)

No need to excuse yourself, I would prolly be paranoid too if I recieved the email before seeing the post here. 600 people is a pretty large mailing list.

This could have been really damaging for some other people. What if the email had told them to delete a system critical file. For those that don't know what those files are then we could be left with a lot of people wondering why their computers wouldn't boot up.

I don't know much about viruses, but I thaught that the only way that a virus can be spread is thru a program, such as java, executable files sent as attachments, macros, etc. So if I am right, the email couldn't really infect your computer if all it was was text... but, I am only a 1st yr Uni CompSci Student, going off what a friend told me (I've had some troubles with some viruses in the past few months...).

That's all I have to say about that...

Well, I have a question. I too have this file but when I looked at its properties the last time it was modified was 11th May 1998.

I'm sure this is a hoax.

Out of interest, what does the icon say when looking at its properties - it looks like LFNGK.
