Running Windows 98 SE.
When I open ineternet Explorer I get this message:
"Internet Explorer Compatability Mode
This is being run in compatability mode and not all features are enabled".
Also whenever I open any application my Dial-up Connection window pops up like it want's to connect to the internet.
Thanks for the help.

Check out support article 216697 from MS. Sounds like compat mode is some sort of install option when upgrading from an older version if IE. Hope this helps.

Run Regedit, and navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/
Software/
Microsoft/
Internet Explorer/
Right click on the "Compatibility Mode" key and select Delete. Once you've done this, go to Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs, double click Internet Explorer and select the "Repair" option when asked. Hope this helps :)

Well ****!
I think my computer has some serious problems, it won't let me run regedit. I ran system file checker and found a few corrupt files and fixed them. I also did scan disk and fixed some problems there, but I still can't run regedit. Any suggestions?

how bout a format of your HD .
then re-install everything...
It's probably a good idea seeing as though you had some errors and corrupt files on your drive.
have you run ms regclean? or scanreg

I ran scanreg and said there was no errors but my Dial-up Connection still pops up.
How do I run ms regclean?
****! I guess I'll start from scratch

You could reinstall the original registry if it is still on your machine or run scanreg and restore a saved backup.
The original backups are in the root folder.
If its just dial up networking - then remove all network componen ts including tcp/ip and dun - reboot , reinstall from original cd by adding back in to networking components - that fixes most dun problems - hate full reinstalls.

I know what you're talking about when the little window pops up and tries to connect....
There's a way to disable that through control panel i believe....
It's been so long since i used dial up and i'm a little rusty when it comes to any configuration details.
But go into control panel and play around a bit

Demand dial - its in control/panel or internet explorer choose internet options , connections and select "never dial a connection"

I had this problem and tracked it down to two versions of IE present in c:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\ which was caused by a virus.
It's possable that a cleaner complicated the problem by doing a rename of the infected one. When all was said and done, the registry also had pointers to both programs (the renamed infected and the restored good Iexplore.exe).
I deleted the infected file (probably not necessary) and used a register mass change tool to set all references to IE to point at the (correct, good) IEXPLORE.EXE.

Old problems are never solved... Their documentation just fades away.
Are any of the devices in device manager running in compatiblity mode???? If so find Win98 drivers for them.....
You can get to Device manager from control panel > system or Alt + Pause key.
