Well! I was sick yesterday and this morning. I went to see a doctor this afternoon because I could not take it anymore. The sneezing, the headache and the blocked nose! I was supposed to work tonight as it was the start of my 4-night shift work and I would be off for 4 days. Well! The doctor gave me one day Medical Leave and I reported to my Shift IC about my condition. He told me that someone from another shift team will cover my duty tonight while I will cover his duty on Sunday.
I was supposed to be off from Sunday but now I have to work thru the weekend. ****! I like to check whether your companies will that to you when you are on medical leave. Like my case, I am not entitled to a good rest. I have to perform my duties as usual and this is weird to me.
My Shift IC will cover one guy's morning shift when he's on Medical Leave while nobody wants to cover my night shift. That guy never need to cover for anyone later on. Not fair! It's all the same thing! 12 hr shift! Why is this happening to me?

Consider yourself luck. Some companies send a big ugly bouncer over to your house to make sure you were not able to work.
What? I can't believe this type of thing can happen in the US or Canada. Sending a 'bouncer' to check on you while you are resting at home? Ridiculous!
Anyway, most of the labor laws don't permit that kind of treatment. Is it true, then?

Mr. Ukulele was kidding you… that does not typically happen here in the U.S.. An employer could find them self in trouble if they sent a Co. representative to a employees private home without notice/consent.
Here in the US we have a government agency that regulates most of these issues. It is called the Department of Labor. Link> http://www.dol.gov/ there are regulations in place regarding sick leave etc… you can read about them on the D.O.L. site.
If you call in sick (or don’t show up) too many times… A US employer will usually just fire you. Then you can have all the time off you want!
I am not sure I understand why you feel cheated? I mean… you did miss 12hours work and all they want is the 12 hours back…right?
Would you rather get those 12 hours of pay taken out of your paycheck? (Note this would mean approx ¼ of you pay will be deducted for that week)
Are you paid by the hour or do you get a salary? Do you expect your company to pay another employee overtime pay for the 12 hours he/she is covering your shift? That hardly seems fair to the company… does it?
Does you company have a written policy regarding sick leave/pay?
I am not familiar with the term “Shift IC”. What is that?
I am not trying to argue with you… just pointing out the way your Co. may view this matter.
Where I currently work, we get 3 sick days a year (paid) and 2 personal days (paid) per year. If I miss another day of work after using up those five days, I would either have to get my pay deducted for the hours missed or have to makeup the missed hours. (salaried people usually makeup time/while hourly employes usually have pay deducted) We call those 2 days “personal” days so we don’t have to lie and say we are sick or anything …lol We also get vacation days. The number of days you are allowed off (w pay) is based on years of service at the company. These policies are all stated clearly in our employee handbook… which can be found in the Co, library. (Bathroom…lol )
If your Co. does not have a policy, I would assume you have no sick days (w pay) at all. Something you should have asked about when you were interviewing for the job.
I hope you are feeling better!

Nathan G.

What's "leave loading"? Is there any part of Australia that has weather that's similar to San Diego? (i.e. constant 72 spring, summer and fall and winters no lower than 40 or so, not much rain or humidity?) I suppose it costs a small fortune to fly down there, eh? :p :p

Leave loading is really shift loading, the extra pay that is required for working evening or night shifts.
However they don't just pay it to shift workers, they pay it to everyone. (unless you work under contract or as a casual employee)
The temperatures around Sydney (inner suburbs not in the western suburbs) are pretty comfortable year round.
The western suburbs are shockers though, it gets over 40 degrees celcius (104 f.) several days per year
The south coast of New South Wales (jarvis Bay area) is pretty nice also.
To fly from LAX to Sydney isn't too bad ( maybe a grand or so). The 15 hour flight is a killer though...

My job is a 12hr shift routine. We have 8 people to perform a 24hr service for the airport. Well! Frankly, my job is just to perform remote monitoring for all the radar systems within the airport. I was sick for one day and that day I needed to do night shift. Anyway, one of my collegues was sick on a morning shift and he did not need to 'pay back'. We have two extra people working with in the morning shift and they work in normal office hours. One of them is my Shift IC (a person who looks after the 8 of us) and the other one is just his assistant.
We are entitled to 10 days of annual leave and 24 days of sick leave. We work on a 4-3-3-4 basis. That means you work 4 days (or nights) and rest 3 days. Thus, we are divided into four shift teams. After some much 'consideration', my Shift IC's assistant covered my duty that day and I do not need to cover anyone's duty anymore. That means I can rest on Sunday onwards. I am in the third shift team. That means I work on a 4-4-3-3 basis. The shift routine rotates. I work in the morning for the first two weeks and night for the last two weeks of the month.
I WAS sick and I think the office hours people should cover me instead. We have this policy that the office hours people should cover the shift people to cut costs. So no OT for the office hours people but they receive timeoff. We're not supposed to do OT anymore because the company wants to cut costs.
